Programs at E.S.U.


This is a brief listing of some of the "health-related" programs at E.S.U. Undergraduate degrees conferred are either Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts. Some departments are in the process of creating homepages, and will have them up and running soon.

Biology Department

For some of these programs, the formal degree is a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in pre-medicine or pre-physical therapy. A Bachelor of Arts degree is also available. These programs also have similar basic science corequisites including: Physics, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and introductory Biology courses. A wide varitey of electives are available. Undergraduate research is available to any student, you simply have to discuss your idea with a professor and receive approval.
The department is currently upgrading its equipment and curriculum, particularly in the area of molecular biology. A new Molecular Biology Laboratory is being established and equipped.

Health Department

The Health Department offers a variety of courses in the administrative and educational aspects of modern healthcare. The department also has the Gamma Xi Chapter of the Eta Sigma Gamma Health Educators Society.
the Health degree programs are accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, a specialized accrediting agency recognized by the U. S. Secretary of Education.

Nursing Department

ESU has one of the few Nursing Departments in northeastern Pennsylvania. The program combines coursework with clinical rotations in a variety of hospital situations. A new program, the Accelerated BSN, has just begun and is designed for students transferring from other majors and schools, as well as for people who already hold undergraduate degrees, to enter the program and take summer courses. That way, the students can take some of the theory work in the summer, and participate in the pre-clinical and clinical work during the school year.

Psychology Department

The Psychology Department offers both B.A. and B.S. degree programs. The B.S. degree offers the additional concntration in the area of Mental Health Worker. This program prepares paraprofessionals in psychometric, case work, co-therapy, or administrative assistance occupations that are under the supervision of psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers, or administrators of mental health facilities.

Speech Pathology and
Audiology Department

This is a pre-professional degree. The program prepares a student for a graduate program in Speech pathology, audiology, and similar areas. The student needs a graduate degree for certification as a speech/language pathologist.
All incoming students (freshmen, transfers etc..) must meet with the department
chairperson, Dr. Jane Page, for formal admission into the SPPA program.
