Research Assistant Positions with TIMSS-R Science Video Study
Positions: 6-mo full-time summer 2002, full- or part-time Fall 2002
Starting: June 15, 2002
Ending: December 15, 2002

Attention graduate students in any science or science education field, science educators, science teachers. 6-month positions are available for Content Analysts of science lessons from 5 different countries with the TIMSS-R Science Video Study. Positions are full-time during the summer; can be full- or part-time in the fall. Must be willing to locate in or near Santa Monica, CA for the 6-month period.

Successful applicants will join the Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Replication (TIMSS-R Video Study). Five nations are participating in TIMSS-R (Australia, Czech Republic, Japan, Netherlands, and the United States). Successful applicants will participate in analyzing the content of science lessons using videotapes of 8th grade science teaching. The job provides an excellent opportunity for participation in a large scale, cross-cultural research study, working with an international team and using cutting-edge video and computer technologies. A great research experience with potential for dissertation research/publication opportunities. The research setting in Santa Monica, CA is also a plus.

Job Requirements: Science Content Analysts must have an undergraduate degree in a science field (biology, chemistry, physics, earth/planetary sciences).

Desirable Qualifications: It is highly desirable that applicants have knowledge of a science field beyond the undergraduate degree (work experience or work towards an advanced degree) and/or experience teaching science. Knowledge of science teaching in schools in either the U.S., the Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Japan, or Australia is helpful. Knowledge of the culture and language of any of these participating countries is also desirable. Background and interest in teaching, research, science, and science education is also desirable.

Content Analysts will be employees of LessonLab, Inc., a research institute located in Santa Monica that is conducting the TIMSS-R Video study under contract with the National Center for Education Statistics and the National Science Foundation.
