Welcome to the 2004 NE-NCHC Conference
We hope you will have a great time during our four days in Hartford.
Exploring our Common Humanity is an appropriate theme for a conference located in one of the most prosperous and important cities of nineteenth century America. Our City-as-Text activities on Friday will enable you to explore Hartford’s connection to important figures and significant events in American life.
Special activities have been planned for the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, the Mark Twain House, and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, America's oldest public art museum. Hartford was also the home of the Thomas Gallaudet, the founder of the American School for the Deaf, and the residence of the great American poet Wallace Stevens, individuals who bring other perspectives to our conference environment. Or visit some of Hartford’s historically important sites such as the Old State House where the fundamentals of American democracy were set forth in 1638, where George Washington met the French and planned the battle of Yorktown in 1780, and especially see its Senate Chamber, called one of the 10 most beautiful rooms in America, where the Gilbert Stuart’s full size portrait of George Washington hangs, and where 53 West Africans captives were tried following their 1839 rebellion on the slave ship Amistad.
We hope that the conference’s presentations, roundtables, and poster sessions will offer enlightening perspectives on our common human condition—presenting insights from the humanities, business, science and technology, even from the learning communities and special activities of individual Honors Programs.
Finally, we want you to meet and interact with faculty and students from other colleges throughout the North East. Take advantage of the scheduled and informal social opportunities at the conference. Interact with others, eat your fill of New England food, explore and ponder some of the issues that are the focal points of the conference, and we trust you will return to your campus much of value.
Best wishes, The NE-NCHC Executive& Conference Planning Committees

Walking around Hartford
The American poet Wallace Stevens lived most of his life in Hartford; this year is the 125th anniversary of his birth and will be commemorated this April in Hartford and elsewhere. Because Stevens never learned how to drive, every day he walked the two miles from his home at 118 Westerly Terrace to his office in the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Building, 690 Asylum Ave., (now the Hartford Insurance Group). As you explore the city, try to see it as he might have seen it, and look for the strange and marvelous that he captured so well in his poems.
