UNIVERISTY CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
This course will introduce the student to the professional (open) literature as well as other sources in Computer Science. The student will investigate an area or problem and assimilate, integrate and present the finding in a scholarly seminar. This course may be taken more than once with approval of the department.
Prerequisite: At least one course successfully completed at the graduate level in Computer Science.
 
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
  • To acquaint the students with the professional literature, other sources, and scholarly research procedures in Computer Science.
  • To provide substantial, in depth, reading in the literature and other sources.
  • To identify a problem or area of interest, and to research, assimilate, integrate and present current approaches, techniques and results dealing with the problem or area of interest.
  • To provide the literature base for an extended research project (CPSC 586, CPSC 587).
  • To provide experience in communicating technical concepts.

    BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE COURSE:
    The following topics will be covered by the course. No order of presentation is implied by this list.
          1.        Introduction to the professional, open, literature as well as other sources (such as lab technical memoranda, tutorial sessions at conferences, technical manuals, etc.)
          2.        Identification of a problem or area of interest.
          3.        Under close faculty supervision, reading in the professional literature and other sources, and the assimilation and integration of current approaches, techniques and results dealing with the problem or area of interest.
          4.        The assembling and presentation of a scholarly seminar dealing with the findings.
