FAQ on GIDetector
What is a genomic island?
A Genomic Island (GI) is segment of DNA seqeuence that contains alien genes transferred from other organisms. For more details, please see wikipedia on Genomic Island
What are the main features associated with GIs ?
GIs usually contain mobile genes, flanking repeated sequences, and proximal transfer-RNAs. The sequenece composition of GIs is typically different than that of non-GIs in the host genome.
How does GIDetector select GIs?
GIDetector select GIs in a prokaryotic genome using decision tree based ensemble models, which in turn are trained using the datasets from three genera: Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus. Multiple features, including DNA sequence composition, flanking RNAs, integrase, etc, are used to build each of models.
