BIOCHEMISTRY @ EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY

The B.A. in biochemistry is offered through the Department of Chemistry at East Stroudsburg University.

The biochemistry program is housed in the Department of Chemistry in the recently renovated Gessner Science Building. With the renovations, a laboratory devoted to biochemistry was added, as were several new equipment items. These facility improvements have greatly enhanced the program and research opportunities.

Students that have graduated from the program have been very successful in subsequent endeavors. Several have gone on to top- rate graduate schools and excelled, often performing at the top of their class. Many graduates have chosen to work and find research positions in industry almost immediately. Feedback from both job placement services and employers has been very positive. This degree also prepares you for professional programs such as medical, dental or veterinarian school. The program is interdisciplinary in nature, but also rigorous; thus, students receive a background that allows them to choose from a variety of career paths after graduation.

Most students with a degree in biochemistry end up in some sort of research-oriented position after graduation. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of biochemistry, the research can be in a wide variety of fields. The pharmaceutical industry, environmental and toxicology testing labs, and biomedical research have been the most popular with ESU graduates. There are opportunities in marine biochemistry, agricultural biochemistry, food science, public health, plant sciences, genetic engineering, biogeochemistry, forensic chemistry and archeology -- to name but a few of the other diverse career possibilities.
