Audition Criteria

Winds

Concert Bb and F scales, full range of ability. One 30 second to two minute excerpt of music demonstrating your musicianship and technical ability

Battery Percussion

8 on a hand, Flam taps (Sixteenth notes at 108+ bpm), Double stroke roll (closed-open-closed), Paradiddles (Sixteenth notes at 144+ bpm), Lesson 25 (144+ bpm); Solo performance of any excerpt or etude of your choice between 30 seconds and two minutes in length.

Pit Percussion

Two mallets are required for auditions. Four mallets are recommended, grip determined by performer preference.

  • Two mallets; Green scale series (on G, B, Ab)
  • Four mallets; Arpeggios on C, Eb, and A; 1-2-3-4, 3-1-2-4, 2-1-4-3, and 4-1-3-2

Solo performance of any excerpt or etude of your choice between 30 seconds and two minutes in length.

Color Guard

All guard:

  • Eight Drop Spins (Right Handed)
  • Four Pop Tosses
  • One Single Money-Hand Toss
  • One 1.5 Money-Hand Toss
  • One 45° Toss
  • One Parallel Toss

A video of you performing a 30 second to two minute routine (can be film from your band/winterguard show, could be original choreo) which best demonstrates your equipment handling skills and some basic body movement.

Weapons line

On Rifle:

  • Eight Drop Spins (Right Handed)
  • Four Single Tosses
  • One Double
  • Opt: Highest toss you can do and accurately catch!

Piano/Synth

Two octave scales, sixteenth notes at 100+ bpm. Solo performance of any excerpt or etude of your choice between 90 seconds and four minutes.

Orchestral Strings

Two contrasting excerpts or etudes of no more than two minutes; one should demonstrate lyrical musicianship and the other technical proficiency.

Guitars

Thirty seconds of comping of a song/chord progression of your choice; one 30 second to two minute solo.

Vocalists

Two songs of your choice, no longer than three minutes each. One should demonstrate lyrical musicianship and the other technical proficiency. (Preference given to those with interest in musical theatre performance)

Note - the Warrior Marching Band Scholarship is only available to first time Pennsylvania students. Limited other scholarships are available.
