East Stroudsburg, Pa. - There is nothing like coming home and this turned out to be no truer Sunday afternoon as local product Kate Melcer kicked the East Stroudsburg women's soccer team into the win column for the first time in 2002. Melcer's goal gave the Warriors a 1-0 double overtime victory past Indiana, Pa. in the team's first home contest of the season.
The Warriors could not have recorded a more important win to take their mark to 1-6-1 overall. The team improves to 1-0-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Confernce play after tying Edinboro on the road 1-1 last Saturday. IUP drops to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in Conference play.
After playing 100 minutes of tight action, it took only another minute and 33 seconds in double overtime for the Warriors to get on the board. Charlene Conklin loft a pass from 25 yards out on the right sideline to Melcer who headed it past the IUP keeper into the upper right corner of the net.
Both goalies in the match had outstanding games. IUP goalie Sarah Daw stopped 17 ESU shots while the Warriors netminder Lindsey Vandergrift blocked 11 shots to get the shutout.
The Warriors will be back in action at home Wednesday afternoon when they host Columbia Union at 2:00 p.m.
