Melcer and Warriors Narrowly Miss Upset Bid
September 11, 2002
Long Island, NY - The schedule can't get any tougher but the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team is even without it showing in the win-loss column. The Warriors took their fourth ranked opponent to the limit behind a pair of goals from Stroudsburg's Kate Melcer but fell just short, 3-2, on a game-winning goal by C.W. Post in the last 1:25.
The defeat drops ESU to 0-5 on the season but the young squad continues to develop into a more promising team with each contest. The squad's first five opponents have a 15-1 mark after today with each being regionally ranked and two in the top 25.
Charlene Conklin lobbed a pass over the C.W. Post defender to Melcer and she booted it past the net minder in the 43rd minute of play for a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Pioneers struck back with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza for a 2-1 tally. The Conklin-Melcer combo struck again to tie the match. Conklin received a pass from Jen Amos and pushed it ahead to Melcer who found the net for a second time at 85:30.
The upset bid was thwarted when Tara Vokes, who already had a goal and an assist, dribbled past the defense and lofted a shot over the ESU goalie for the game-winner at 88:35.
The Warriors outshot C.W. Post 16-11 while goalie Lindsay Vandergrift saved six Pioneer shots on goal.
ESU travels to northwestern Pennsylvania to face their sixth consecutive regionally ranked team in Edinboro for a 1:00 p.m. match Saturday.
