National licensed coach Derek Arneaud has completed a decade as an East Stroudsburg soccer coach.
He has
been associated with Warrior soccer for 14 years, including four as a player.
Arneaud has been head coach of the ESU women's soccer team for six seasons with his squads compiling an
overall record of 69-42-5 for a. 616 winning per-centage.
Before that, he was an assistant coach of ESU men's soccer team under Coach Jerry Sheska for four years
during which time the teams were 60-26-4.
Arneaud's 1997 women's squad won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title, finished 16-5
and gained the school's first NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament berth. He was named the PSAC Coach of the
Year.
His 1998 team was the conference runner-up and finished 13-5-2. Three of his other four teams
posted winning records with marks of 11-6-1 in both 1995 and 1996 and 11-8-1 in 1999. The lone exception
was last year's squad which finished 7-10. Arneaud is determined that the Warriors will bounce back this
season and return to the conference playoffs.
"We were sub-par last year and we worked hard at recruiting that it doesn't happen again," he
said. "We're looking for 21 to 24 players who are totally committed to the game and to the program -
that's the way we'll get it done."
In addition to recruiting, Arneaud spent the last year attending numerous coaching clinics
to
learn new ideas and new coaching strategies.
"We want the players to have a better understanding of the game and their roles as players. We're
going to add an education base, especially during the pre-season period, so we're not just coaching the
players, we're also teaching them about the game of soccer," he added.
Arneaud himself is one of the few coaches to hold a United States Soccer Federation 'A' Coaching
License.
A native of Trinidad, Arneaud played for ESU as a midfielder in the mid-1980s and earned
NCAA
All-Mid Atlantic second team honors as a sophomore in 1984. He suffered a knee injury during his junior
year which hampered his career. He still helped the team to a berth in the NCAA Division II Soccer
Tournament in 1986.
He began his coaching career as head boys' soccer coach at Notre Dame High School in East
Stroudsburg for three years from 1988-1990. His teams won two PIAA district titles and had a three-year
record of 46-11-2. He has been a Health and Physical Education instructor at Notre Dame for 12 years.
