---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Warriors clinched their first winning season since 1996 by downing Mansfield, 34-20, in the home finale. It gave the team a 6-4 record with one game remaining, at Edinboro Saturday.

Quarterback Geoff Brobst (Jr., Fern Glen, Pa./Hazleton Area) passed for three touchdowns while fullback A.J. Oliveri (So., Pittston, Pa./Pittston) ran for two TDs.

Brobst's scoring pass plays were to wide receiver Mike Patrick (Sr., East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) for five yards, tight end Matt Triolo (Fr., East Stroudsburg, Pa./ Stroudsburg) for 15 yards and wide receiver John Kotarsky (Jr.. Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) for 76 yards, the team's longest play of the season.

Oliveri plunged for one and four yards for his two scores. His second TD came with 1:30 remaining and climaxed an 80-yard drive in 13 plays which took six minutes and 26 seconds and wrapped up the victory.

Brobst completed six of 12 passes overall for 173 yards. Kotarsky caught three passes for 140 yards and Patrick three for 68 yards.

Tailback Andre Castiglioni (Jr., Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) ran for 49 yards on 19 carries and became the school's fourth 1,000-yard rusher with 1,045 yards. He needs 65 yards in the final game to break the school season record of 1,109 yards set by Stewart Ford in 1997.

Offensive guard Jim Sodano (Jr., Madison, N.J./Bayley-Ellard) continued his outstanding play on the line as he graded at 86 percent in the coaches' film evaluations.

On defense, linebacker Kevin Nagle (Gr., Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) turned in 33rd double-digit tackle game of his career and eighth this season with a game-high 13 tackles, nine unassisted and four assisted. He made two tackles for loss for nine yards. He also blocked a Mansfield field goal attempt.

Cornerback Bryan Hooks (Fr., Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) intercepted a pass in the second quarter and returned it 50 yards to the Mounties' 15-yard line. It was followed on the next play by the Brobst to Triolo touchdown pass which put the Warriors ahead for good, 13-12.

Men's Soccer (17-2-1, 8-0 PSAC)

Last Week's Results: #California, Pa. (H) 2-0W. #PSAC Championship Game

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goalie Jason Land (Jr., Carney's Point, N.J./St. James) posted his third straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game shutout and was named the game's outstanding player as the Warriors beat California, Pa., 2-0, for the 2000 PSAC men's soccer title.

It was the Warriors' fourth straight conference title and eighth in nine years. Coach Jerry Sheska's team has now won ten straight games and is awaiting a possible invitation to the NCAA Division II Soccer Tournament which will start this weekend.

Land made five saves, including a brilliant diving stop in the final minutes, in recording his eighth shutout of the season and sixth in a row. He extended his scoreless streak to 572 minutes and lowered his goal-against average to 0.35 per game. He had been in the nets in the Warriors' 1-0 championship game win over Millersville two years ago and 3-0 title victory over Lock Haven last season.

Forward Jorge Chapoy (So., Montclova, Mexico/Pequea Valley, Pa.) scored the team's first goal after only 6:44, lofting a shot over the goalie's head after a pass from forward Tom Mustac (Jr., West Milford, N.J./Clifton). It was his 20th goal in 20 games.

Forward Brad Konawalik (Jr., Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) headed in an insurance goal 13:23 into the second half after a pinpoint crossing pass from midfielder Eric Kolar (So., Fredricksburg, Pa./Tulpehocken).

Kolar also starred on defense as he marked California's top scorer, Tomas Boltnar (20 goals and 19 assists) and kept him from being a factor in the game. Sweeper back Sean Stewart (so., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Munro College) also was a standout on defense.

It was ESU's 14th PSAC men's soccer title and tenth under Sheska.
