Vanic, Swart Named Trainers for ESU Athletic Program

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Dr. Keith Vanic has been named head athletic trainer and Jonathan Swart associate athletic trainer for the East Stroudsburg University athletic program.

Both will be members of the ESU athletic department and will report to Earl W. Edwards, the athletic director. They will be responsible for handling the training needs of more than 400 student-athletes in the school's 19 intercollegiate sports.

In the past, the ESU athletic trainers were members of the Department of Movement Studies and Exercise Science and also had teaching responsibilities. Now those athletic trainers, John Thatcher, Lois Wagner, Mert Shane, John Hauth and Kelly Harrison, can concentrate solely on their classroom work, mainly in the school's Athletic Training and Sports Medicine curriculum.

Vanic is returning to the ESU staff although under a new reporting relationship. Last year, he was an athletic trainer, but also taught classes for the Department of Movement Studies and Exercise Science. He will have no teaching responsibilities in his present job.

A December, 1994 ESU graduate, Vanic worked with a Division I football program at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1996-98. He earned a PhD in Human Performance and Recreation from Southern Mississippi last December.

He previously had been a teaching assistant and clinical instructor at James Madison University where he received a master’s degree in Health Sciences in 1996.

Vanic has written more than 25 articles which have been published in athletic training and health education journals and presented at clinical symposiums. He is currently working on two research projects which have been funded by the National Athletic Training Association.

As an undergraduate at ESU, Vanic received the 1995 Dave Carlyon Award as the school’s outstanding student athletic trainer.
