Stinson Captures 400 Hurdles Title to Highlight ESU Effort at PSAC Championships

May 10, 2003

LOCK HAVEN - East Stroudsburg University's Mark Stinson, a senior competing in his last conference competition, earned a gold medal Saturday in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships.

Stinson, who had placed individually in the PSAC meets eight times without winning, finally climbed to the top of the awards stand after jumping and sprinting to victory in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.19.

ESU had three other top-three finishers, two expected and one a surprise. Defending champion Brad Fees placed second in the high jump at 6-8 ¾, losing a jump-off for the title to Shawn Landis of Kutztown. Sprinter Tawny Youtz was third in the 200-meter dash in 25.75 and also placed fourth in the 100 dash in 12.54.

Freshman Amy Donovan provided the Warriors with the stunner. Coming in as only the sixth seed in the triple jump with a season best 37-0, the freshman from Birdsboro soared to a third-place finish with a hop, skip and jump of 39-4 ½.

Donovan's performance surpassed the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard of 38-0 ½ and should put her in the national championships May 22-24 in Edwardsville, Ill. It also was only an inch and a quarter short of the ESU school record held by at Quanette Jester at 39-5 ¾, set in 2001.

Stinson also may make the NCAA championships as a provisional qualifier and that was the reason he was competing in the 400 hurdles. He had concentrated on the 200-meter dash and long jump until this season.

"Mark went to the NCAA championships last year to watch his brother Matt (a senior at Lock Haven) compete in the decathlon and he decided that he really wanted to make the nationals," said ESU coach Joe Koch.

"He realized that he probably would never make it in the 200 as he was a little short of speed and he didn't have the distance in the long jump. He sat down with (assistant coach) Chris Merli and they thought the 400 hurdles would be his best chance not only to make the nationals but also to win a conference title. Obviously, it was a good decision."

Shippensburg, which won its first title since 1997, scored 121 points to Lock Haven's 116. Slippery Rock was third with 83. ESU placed eighth with 35 points.
Slippery Rock recaptured the women's crown which it last won in 2001 with 122.16 points. Lock Haven was second with 97 followed by Shippensburg with 95. The Warrior women also were eighth with 33.16 points.

Eight other ESU athletes placed Saturday. Mike Newhard was a double place-winner with sixths in both the 100 hurdles in 15.62 and the high jump at 6-4 ¾. He had previously won three PSAC high jump titles, but was hampered by an ankle injury suffered in the qualifying heats for the hurdles Friday.

Barry Krammes placed fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 208-6 and Steve Denninger was fifth in the 400 dash in 49.79. Both the men's relay teams finished fourth with the 4 x 100 quartet of Stinson, Newhard, Mike Glover and Doug Joseph timed in 42.56 and the 4 x 400 combo of Denninger (50.2), Brad Treadway (51.3), Matt Bevan (49.2) and Stinson (48.6) finishing in 3:19.60.

On the women's side, Jillian Koscielecki was fifth in the 400 hurdles in 63.66 with Jayme Ferraro sixth in the same event in 63.70. Both bettered the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard. Alyssa Thompson was fifth in the discus with a career-best 123-2 while taking sixths were Becky Fitz in the triple jump, 37-2, and Christa Sandvig in the javelin, 134-4.

The women's 4 x 400-meter relay of Ferraro (60.8), Koscielecki (59.8) and Kristin Mullin (58.8) and Youtz (55.9 the fastest split in school history) was fourth in 3:55.52. Mullin finished seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:21.99.

Kutztown swept the individual men's honors with Landis, who also won the triple jump, named the outstanding track and field athlete and Scott Eisenhart, first in the 400-meter dash in a stadium record 47.54, chosen as the top track athlete.

On the women's side, IUP's Becky Bullard, champion in the hepthatlon, high jump and 1,500-meter run, was named the outstanding field athlete and Lock Haven's Jennifer Farrow, who swept the 200 and 400-meter dashes, was named the leading track athlete.
