The Rotary Club of the Stroudsburgs’ share of the proceeds of the Rotary Pocono Classic benefits the American Cancer Society of Monroe County Unit and its Daffodil Express program.

The Monroe Unit of the American Cancer Society prides itself on patient service delivery. The Road to Recovery vans were first instituted by the Monroe Unit - the very first in all of Pennsylvania Division’s 66 Units.

The society also was the first to offer those patients, who did not have any other means of reaching treatment centers, daily transportation. During 1998 as of Nov. 21, the Daffodil Express had carried 66 patients for a total of 1,074 patient trips.

In 1981, the unit volunteers working with the Monroe County Area Agency on Aging staff approached the Rotary Club of the Stroudsburgs and citizens of the county to help fund the Daffodil Express I.

Starting in January, 1982, an Oldsmobile sedan transported local cancer patients to the closest radiation therapy centers (which, at the time, were in Bethlehem and Allentown). Several years later, in 1987, and after 135,000 miles w ere logged, a second vehicle, a 14-passenger van hit the road.

Within three years, the Daffodil Express II had travelled more than 123,000 miles. Transportation for hundreds of patients and thousands of miles were accomplished by volunteer drivers - some of whom drove more than 60,000 ea ch.

Now the Cancer Society is running Daffodil Express IV which already has run more than 122,000 miles.

Over the last 18 years, the Daffodil Express vehicles have driven close to 700,000 miles showing the need for the program.
