Goalies Have Their Way as ESU and Millersville Play to Scoreless Tie
October 9, 2002
Millersville, Pa. - One hundred and ten minutes and nothing was decided. It was the night of the goalies as Millersville's Ryan Schlegel recorded his fourth consecutive shutout while Bill Sterner notched his fifth on the year for East Stroudsburg University as the two men's soccer team played to a 0-0 double overtime affair. The Warriors had four good scoring opportunities in the second half and the overtimes but came up empty each time.
The 18th-ranked Warriors go to 9-1-1 on the year and 2-1-1 in the PSAC. The Mauraders take their season mark to 7-2-2 and 3-1-2 in the league.
With three minutes to play in the first overtime, East Stroudsburg midfielder Joey Piscopo hit a rising 12-yard shot from the right wing, but was turned away.
East Stroudsburg controlled the territorial advantage for most of the contest and nearly got the winner with 3:20 left in double overtime. Millersville's Schlegel denied Warrior midfielder Wesley Gayle on a 12-yard dead-on blast to keep the contest scoreless.
In regulation, East Stroudsburg ace striker Jorge Chapoy, the leading scorer in the PSAC (17 goals, 37 points) had two good scoring chances from the 20-yard range. Schlegel denied both blasts from Chapoy.
The Warriors will head back home where they will host PSAC rival Lock Haven this Sunday at Eiler-Martin Stadium with a 12noon start.
