Sandy Miller, East Stroudsburg field hockey coach, is entering her 18th year doing what she claims
is "the best job in the world."
"I love it. I love to coming to work every day and coaching and working with each group of
student-athletes. It's a great life," Miller enthuses.
Miller has enjoyed a great deal of success at ESU. She has been involved in the development of ESU
student-athletes for nearly two decades in field hockey and two other sports, women's lacrosse and
basketball.
She has been the head coach of both the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams for 17 years. She
served as an assistant coach of the basketball teams for 11 seasons from 1984 to 1985.
Her field hockey teams have posted 14 straight non-losing season with 13 winning records and a
10-10 campaign in 1999. Her overall coaching record is 182-139-11 for a .567 winning percentage.
Her squads have qualified for eight ECAC Division II Field Hockey Championships and have won five
titles, 1989 and four in a row from 1993 to 1996. They have qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament
three times in 1987, 1988 and 1990.
Under Miller's guidance, the Warriors have made the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
playoffs seven times. The team has placed third in the conference three times with the latest in1996.
The 2000 ESU team finished with a 14-7 record and made the ECAC Division II championship game
before falling to Longwood, 5-4 in overtime.
Miller was honored as the PSAC Coach of the Year in 1996 and the National Field Hockey Coaches'
Association Division II Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994 after leading the Warriors to ECAC titles.
She has produced All-America players 13 of the last 15 years including the last nine in a row.
Overall, there have been 22 All-America players including midfielder Rachel Miller and forward Kate Dideon
last year.
Two team members, goalie Shelly Knapik and Katie Horst, earned GTE (now Verizon) Academic
All-America first team honors.
Miller is a national leader in field hockey and has served on many NCAA committees. She now is the
chair of the North-South Coach of the Year Award Committee.
She formerly was on the NCAA Field Hockey Sports Committee and was chair of the National Academic
Squad and All-America committees. She also was the Division II representative on the National Field Hockey
Coaches' Association Board of Directors.
In lacrosse, Miller was named the PSAC Coach of the Year in 2000 after her team finished 11-4 for
a school victory record and placed second in the conference.
An outstanding athlete at Lock Haven University, Miller earned 11 varsity letters in four
different sports. She was chosen as the school's outstanding senior female athlete in 1983. In field
hockey, she was an NCAA Division II All-America and two-time All-Conference first team selection and
played on two national-championship squads.
She still is an active athlete and is regarded as one of the area's top female golfers.
The Lebanon, Pa. native earned a bachelor's degree from Lock Haven in 1983 and a master's degree
from ESU in 1988, both in Health and Physical Education.
