2001-2002 Men's Basketball Roundup |
Injuries to key players resulted in the Warriors putting one of the youngest teams in the school's
history on the court for the school's 100th year of basketball in 2001-2002. A gala centennial
celebration was held Feb. 16th with a luncheon followed by alumni games and a basketball doubleheader
against Bloomsburg.
Coach Mike Power started four sophomores and one freshman during most of the Pennsylvania
State
Athletic Conference. He only had one junior or senior on the entire second semester roster
The big loss was an injury to senior guard Juwan Justice in the first conference game. He played
only four minutes the rest of the season, but still wound up as the team's leading scorer with 269 points
for an average of 17.9 points.
Justice was selected on the Panaia-Soloway All-Rotary Pocono Classic team. He scored in
double
figures in every game until he was hurt with a high of 28 points in a close loss to California. He
finished his career with 1,248 points, tenth highest in the school's history.
Even though the team won only four games, it battled to the wire against some highly-rated
opponents. The team led California, 39-31, at halftime as David Fedorka scored 16 points and Justice 14,
but the Vulcans rallied for a 77-73 overtime win.
The Warriors also carried PSAC Eastern Division champion Millersville to double overtime
in a
late-season game in the Marauders' gym before falling, 66-65.
Center Jon Kelley developed into one of the conference's top rebounders and grabbed 181 rebounds
or 8.2 per game. He also made the Panaia-Soloway All-Rotary Pocono Classic team.
Fedorka finished with 9.3 points per game and had ten double-figure scoring performances. He hit
19 points, including five 3-pointers, in a home finale to Bloomsburg. He missed six mid-season contests
because of a hand injury. Also sidelined was Gabe Crowley, who averaged 16.5 points in the first four
games.
Other starters included forward Rob Georges, guards Wayne Bishop, John Krimmel and Chris
Coursey.
Frontcourt players Andy Wimmer and Jonn Glenn and guards Justin Boehret and David Majeski also saw action
in most games.
