Dideon, Derby and Miller Make All-PSAC Field Hockey
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Three East Stroudsburg University players, forward Kate Dideon, midfielder Rachel Miller and back Kelly Derby, have been chosen on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference field hockey team announced Tuesday.
ESU midfielder Meghan Furnia was honored on the second team. Coach Sandy Miller's Warriors, now 13-6, will play host to the ECAC Division II Field Hockey Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Whitenight Field.
A total of 26 players, 14 on the first team and 12 on the second, were honored in a balloting of the conference's nine head field hockey coaches.
Dideon leads the Warriors in scoring with 15 goals and five assists, which is third high in the conference. She has scored goals in ten games including a 'hat trick' against Mansfield and two goals apiece against UMass-Lowell, C.W. Post and Slippery Rock.
The junior from Lancaster (Living Word Academy HS) scored game-winning goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over Rowan and a 1-0 win over Wesley. She made the All-PSAC second team last season.
Miller is considered the team's most consistent player from her left midfield position. She helps the Warriors control the center of the field and has tallied two goals and four assists.
The junior from Tunkhannock (Tunkhannock HS) played one year on Lock Haven's 1998 PSAC championship team before transferring to ESU last season.
Derby is the leader on an ESU defense which has allowed only 22 goals in 19 games for an average of just over a goal per game. She leads the squad in defensive saves.
The senior from Ilion, N.Y.(Mohawk Central HS) was a first-year starter this season after being a key reserve back for two years. She serves as one of the team's co-captains.
Furnia, a junior from Mount Joy (Conestoga Valley HS), also is a standout in the midfield area and is tied for the team lead in assists with five. She has scored one goal. She had been an All-PSAC first team selection last year.
Conference champion Lock Haven had both conference major award-winners. The Bald Eagles' Shanna Vitale, a midfielder, was named the PSAC Player of the Year while teammate and back Jen Denault was selected as the Rookie of the Year.
