Nagle, Hostetter, Kacanda Makes All-PSAC First Team

LOCK HAVEN - Linebacker Kevin Nagle of East Stroudsburg University has been chosen on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division first team for the second straight year.

Two other ESU players, punter Adam Hostetter and kick returner Matt Kacanda, also were selected on the first team.

A total of 29 players were voted to the All-PSAC first team, 15 on offense and 14 on defense, in a balloting of the division's seven head coaches. Another 32 players, 17 on offense and 15 on defense, made the second team.

The Warriors had four players, offensive guard Jim Sodano, running backs Stewart Ford and Andre Myers and linebacker Mike Rhine, named to the second team.

Nagle led the overall conference in tackles for the second straight year with 123 in 11 games on 81 first-hits and 42 assists. He made 13 tackles for loss for 54 yards including four sacks for 30 yards. He blocked two kicks.

Unlike last year, however, Nagle was not selected as the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year. That award went to Kutztown linebacker Terrence Miles, who had 73 tackles in eight games and led the league with four forced fumbles.

Although he has already graduated, Nagle, a Pleasant Valley High School product, has only played three years for the Warriors and can use his final year of eligibility next season as a graduate student if he desires.

Hostetter, a sophomore from Red Lion, was the conference's leading punter with a 40.4-yard average on 64 punts for 2,584 yards. His kicks were returned only 150 yards for an average of less than three yards per punt.

Kacanda, a sophomore from Bethlehem-Freedom, set two NCAA Division II national records with 48 kickoff returns for a record 1,210 yards. The old marks with 47 returns and 1,002 yards. He averaged 25.2 yards per return. He also returned 20 punts for an 11.3-yard average.

Myers, a repeater on the second team, led the Warriors in rushing with 506 yards in 11 games. The senior from Coatesville finished his career with 1,802 yards, fifth best in the school's history.

Ford, a junior from Lancaster, rushed for 466 yards and caught 17 passes for another 193 yards in eight games. He scored a team-leading nine touchdowns.

Both benefitted from the blocking of Sodano, a sophomore from Madison, N.J. who was one of the leaders on the offensive line. He scored better than 80 percent in the film evaluations in eight of the 11 games and only allowed two sacks all season.< /P>

Rhine was an All-PSAC second team choice for the third straight year. The senior from Perkasie played in only five games before being sidelined by an ankle injury. He made 18 tackles including three for loss and had two interceptions.

He was honored as a Burger King Scholar-Athlete award winner for his 3.76 average in Biology.

Wide receiver Kevin Ingram of West Chester was chosen as the PSAC East Player of the Year after making 82 catches for 1,050 yards and 16 touchdowns. Rick Daniels of West Chester was selected as the East Coach of the Year and linebacker Pete Mendez of Kutztown was named the Rookie of the Year.

Nagle, Hostetter, Zinn Named to All-ECAC Team

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Three East Stroudsburg University players, linebacker Kevin Nagle, punter Adam Hostetter and defensive back Jason Zinn, have been chosen on the ECAC Division II All-South Region Football Team announced Wednesday.

A total of 31 players were honored, 14 on offense, 13 on defense and four on special teams, in a vote of the region's head coaches.

Nagle is a repeat selection on the first team. He previously had been picked on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division and the Daktronics All-Northeast Region first teams.

The senior from Effort led the ESU team and the conference in tackles for the second straight year with 123 on 81 first hits and 42 assists. He had 13 tackles for loss for 54 yards and four sacks for 30 yards.

Hostetter, a sophomore from Red Lion, was the top punter in the PSAC with a 40.4 yard average. He punted 64 times for a 2,584 yards with 17 landing dead inside the 20-yard line. Opponents returned his kicks only 150, less than three yards per pun t.

Zinn, a junior from Hanover, led the Warriors in interceptions with six, which was tied for third in the league. He returned one interceptions 22 yards for a touchdown against Glenville State. He also was second in tackles with 83.

All three will be returning for Coach Denny Douds' squad next season. The Warriors finished with a 4-7 record.

Quarterback Mike Mitros of West Chester was chosen as the ECAC Division II South Player of the Year while quarterback Bryan Eyerman of IUP was named the ECAC Division II South Rookie of the Year.

ESU's Nagle on All-Northeast Region Team Again

ALLENDALE, Mi - Linebacker Kevin Nagle of East Stroudsburg University has been chosen on the Daktronics, Inc. All-Northeast Region football team for the second straight year.

A total of 25 players were chosen from teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Eastern Conference, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and five independent schools. The voting was done by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Nagle and the other first team choices will advance to the ballot for the Dakronics Division II All-America team which will be announced later this month.

The 6-2, 230-pound middle linebacker led the PSAC in tackles for the second straight year with 123 tackles, including 81 first hits and 42 assists. He had 13 tackles for loss for 54 yards with four sacks for 30 yards.

A former Pleasant Valley High School star, Nagle had made the All-PSAC first team the last two years. He has played three seasons for the Warriors and has another year of eligibility remaining next season as a graduate student, if he wishes to use it.

There are six other repeats selections on the first team in running backs Damian Bean of Shepherd and Kevin Gailliard of AIC, wide receiver Kevin Ingram of West Chester, place-kicker Doc Proctor of Ferris State, linebacker Lee Rizzoto of Millersvil le and defensive back Brian Polk of Slippery Rock.
