Wild Final Minute for Warriors Falls Short at the Glenville Goaline
September 14, 2002
Glenville, WV - After all hope seemed lost, a miracle win for East Stroudsburg was batted away at the Glenville State goaline. ESU's Pat Good forced Glenville back Toby Murray to fumble where Nick Beisker returned the pigskin back to the Pioneer 17-yard line with three ticks left. The Warriors saw their game-winning throw from Drew Baumgardner batted down at the goaline to fall 33-28.
Michel Glover pulled ESU (1-1) the closest they had been since the first quarter when he picked off Glenville State QB Joey Conrad for a 25-yard touchdown to pull within 33-28 with 3:53 remaining.
The Pioneers drove 45 yards on seven plays before the second Murray fumble of the game was returned by Beisker to set up the wild finish.
Glenville soundly won the first half to open 21-0 halftime lead before the Warriors came alive in the third quarter compliments of Beisker's opportunistic play on defense.
Beisker hit Murray for a fumble midway through the third quarter, which ESU turned into their first score five plays later on a Greg Vaughn three-yard plunge. The senior cornerback picked off a Glenville State pass later in the third to give ESU the field position for their second score, a 22-yard screen pass to Anthony Carfagno.
The Pioneers seemed to have every answer for a hard-charging second half effort from East Stroudsburg. Leading 21-14, Murray bolted 93 yards through the Warrior defense for a touchdown to extend their margin into double figures, 27-14. Glenville State answered an ESU score for a second time on a 34-yard strike with 6:50 left to Antonio Carter to make it 33-21.
Glenville State outgained ESU 508-279 including 286 net yards rushing after the Warriors allowed only nine yards in their first contest.
