Founded in the 19th century, East Stroudsburg University has entered its third century as a small university providing high-quality, affordable academic programs so that the students can Learn More. Do More. Be More. The university offers approximately 80 undergraduate and graduate programs. This includes new fields geared to the technology of the 21st century. Approval has been given for programs in bio-technology, chemical bio-technology and computer security which will begin in the near future.
The school has not forgotten its roots as its commitment to teacher education and the liberal arts is as strong as ever. The campus, which services a student body of approximately 5,800, with 4,800 undergraduates, consists of 59 buildings on 184 acres.
The 2000-2001 term marks the school's 109th year of operation. With an enrollment of 320 students, classes began at the East Stroudsburg Normal School Sept. 4, 1893.
In 1926 after the state took over control, the name was changed to East Stroudsburg State Teachers' College and in 1960, the school became East Stroudsburg State College, to reflect an expanded academic curriculum.
In July, 1983, the current East Stroudsburg University of Pennsyl-vania was born as a comprehensive regional institution of higher learning and one of the 14 schools of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
