Julie Del Giorno Named Academic Coordinator for Athletics at East
Stroudsburg University
Julie A. Del Giorno, a former All-America athlete and later
a coach and administrator at the United States Military Academy, has been named academic coordinator for the intercollegiate athletics program at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Del Giorno will be a faculty member in the Department of
Intercollegiate Athletics at ESU and will begin work Monday
(March 8th), according to athletic director Earl W. Edwards.
Her main responsibility will be to work closely with
student-athletes on their academic progress. That includes their
grades, the selection of their majors, satisfactory progress
toward their degrees and life skills to prepare them for the
future.
She also will work with Dr. Carey Snyder, the
associate athletic director, in monitoring NCAA compliance
and eligiblity rules. She will serve as a liaison between
athletics and academic offices on campus.
"We are extremely pleased to add Julie Del Giorno to our
staff. She comes with the highest recommendations and
has an outstanding background both in military and college
settings," said Edwards.
Del Giorno was a 1986 graduate of West Point where she earned All-America second team honors as a senior on the
basketball team. She scored 1,270 points and grabbed 927
rebounds during a four-year career. She was the recipient
of the school’s highest athletic award in being presented
the Army Athletic Association Trophy at graduation.
She served seven years in the military including assignments
as human resource manager at Fort Lewis, Wa. and as transportation company commander at Fort Drum, N.Y. A member
of the Transportation branch, she served in the Gulf War and Operation Restore Hope in Somalia and was a Bronze Star
medal recipient.
Del Giorno returned to West Point in 1993 as assistant
athletic director for operations and support and senior
woman adminstrator. In the position, she managed and
coordinated all aspects of student-athlete academic affairs
including eligibility and NCAA compliance.
She also was the assistant women’s basketball coach
at Army in 1995-96. After resigning her commission and working
in private industry for a year, she returned to college in 1997
as a graduate assistant at the University of Central Arkansas.
She was the assistant women’s soccer coach and also was an
assistant to the school’s NCAA compliance coordinator.
Del Giorno has earned a bachelor of science degree from West
Point in 1986 and a master’s degree in Business Administration
from Central Arkansas last December. She is a native of
Rochester, N.Y. and lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for three
years before entering the military academy.
Although Del Giorno is serving in a new full-time faculty
position at ESU, the school had an academic coordinator for
athletics in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Football coach
and professor Jim Wenker first served in the position for three
years and then athletic trainer and professor Mert Shane took
over for a year and a half.
"In the past, we had this position on a `borrowed’ basis
from other areas. This solidifies the position and gives us
a better structure to work with our student-athletes and
coordinate our efforts with other offices on campus,"
said Edwards.
