The Warriors had some heavy hitters and strong pitching performances during the 2002 baseball
season. The team posted a 20-29-1 record with eight of the losses to NCAA Regional finalists Kutztown and
Mansfield.
Designated hitter Len Makarczyk led the team in batting with a .389 average on 65 hits, fifth most
in the school's history, in 167 at-bats. He pounded 13 doubles and five home runs and drove in 43 runs.
The senior from Wilkes-Barre made an almost unbeliev-able start to the season. He was 7-for-9 with two
home runs, three doubles and seven RBIs in a three-game series at Longwood.
Third baseman Jeremy Miller was next in hitting at .357 which included a team-high 15
doubles,
tied for the second most ever at the school. He was followed by catcher-first baseman Chad Waelchli,
.344, rightfielder Bryan Yagel, .325; leftfielder Steve Harris, .310, and second baseman Ryan Hatfield,
.301.
Yagel led the team in runs-batted-in for the second straight year with 46 and set a school career
record for RBIs with 109 in only two seasons. The senior from Sunbury made the All-Pennsyl-vania State
Athletic Conference second team.
Hatfield also made the All-PSAC second team. The junior from Pottstown led the team in
runs
scored with 40, four more than any other player.
Other regulars were catcher Jeff Dahl, shortstop Matt DelGiudice, centerfielder Blake Martin, and
designated hitter-first baseman Joe Sobeski.
Gordy Kocher was the most successful starting pitcher, posting a 5-5 record. He struck out nine
batters and didn't allow an earned run in a 3-2 victory over Slippery Rock and tossed a two-hit shutout in
a 7-0 nod over West Chester.
Adam Swavely gained PSAC Pitcher of the Week honors after a masterful eight-inning
pitching
performance against West Chester in which he allowed four hits, struck out 11 batters and walked none. He
retired the last 19 batters in order.
Ryan Amey also had an 11-strikeout win over New Jersey Tech. Mike Zimorowicz tied a
school career
record with his 19th win in a season-ending four-hit, 7-1 victory over Bloomsburg. Relievers Ryan
Pugliese and Paul Kapral both were 3-1 with Pugliese also getting back-to-back saves in a doubleheader
sweep over Nyack.
