Scranton `86 - On and off the field, Coach Roger Barren continues to work tirelessly to provide East Stroudsburg with a high-quality baseball program. Last year's team finished third in the always-tough Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, matching the 1998 squad for the school's best finish in 15 years. The team posted a 27-26 winning record. Over the last four years, Barren's teams have been 97-85-1 with a best mark of 28-16 in 1998. His first three squads were young and lacking in one area or another other before the program turned the corner in 1997.
With team's six top hitters returning, including the All-Conference and All-Region double play combination of shortstop Brett Reynolds and second baseman Tadgh LaBar, Barren expects his 2001 team to continue the program's success. Under Barren's guidance, the Warriors have upgraded their schedule every season and play the maximum number of games allowed by the NCAA. They will play six games in February and early March, including a contest at Division I Lafayette, before making their annual trip to Florida for a series of ten games. Within the last year, the team has added new batting cages both indoors and outdoors and a new Astroturf-surfaced bullpen area. In addition, the infield at Mitterling Field was redone last fall with the same type of clay used at Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium in New York.Assistant Coach at Keystone Junior College, Marywood
Before coming to ESU, the former Dickson City resident was an assistant coach at Keystone Junior College in 1992 and at Marywood College from 1987-89. A former outfielder for Scranton Prep High School, Barren went on to play for the Hyde Park Panthers in the semi-professional Scranton Association from 1983-85. He led the Panthers in seven categories, including a .386 batting a verage in 1984, and was named the team’s most valuable player. He coached the Northeastern Babe Ruth League all-star team to three state and five district titles. He is a popular and sought-after speaker at camps and clinics. Barren also serves as general manager of the Scranton Red Soxx of the Atlantic Collegiate Summer Baseball League. His overall coaching record at ESU is 146-162-1. He was an assistant coach at the school in 1993 under Coach Glenn Hayes. Barren has two degrees from the University of Scranton, a bachelor's degree earned in 1986 and a master's degree awarded in 1988, both in Business Communications. He and his wife, Patrice, live in Moscow, PA.Assistant Coaches
