ESU’s High-Scoring Forward Justina Woolf Named PSAC Women’s Soccer Player of Year
LOCK HAVEN – East Stroudsburg University’s high-scoring forward Justina Woolf has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year.
Woolf also was named to the All-Conference first team for the fourth time. She had been chosen as the PSAC Rookie of the Year in 1997.
One other ESU player, back Jen Amos, was selection on the All-PSAC first team. She had been a second team selection as a freshman two years.
A total of 26 players, 13 on the first team and 13 on the second, were honored in a balloting of the league’s 12 head coaches.
Woolf led the conference in goals with 18 in 17 games for an average of 1.06 per game. She added two assists for 38 points.
The senior from Womelsdorf (Tulpehocken High School) set a school single-game scoring record with four goals in a 7-5 win over California and had three goals apiece in 3-2 victories over Adelphi and LIU-Southampton. She also had the game-winning goals in a 2-1 overtime win over West Chester and a 1-0 decision over Millersville.
"Justina set high standards for herself this season and then reached them," said ESU Coach Derek Arneaud. "She took our team on her shoulders and carried us all season although the defenses were geared to try and stop her."
The Warriors finished 8-9, including a 5-6 conference mark, and Woolf had 58 percent of the team’s 31 goals.
For her career, Woolf finished with 59 goals, second highest mark in the school’s history to the 74 goals scored by Terri Meierhofer from 1994-97. Meierhofer was named the PSAC Player of the Year in 1997.
Woolf had 14 game-winning goals and 12 multi-goal games during her career with five ‘hat tricks.’ She set a school record as a junior by scoring goals in eight consecutive games.
"Justina was quicker and stronger than defenders and she could finish the ball off with either foot which she did often this season," said Arneaud.
Amos was the team’s top marking defender as an outside back. The junior from Reading (Exeter High School) has been a three-year starter and is expected to be one of the leaders of the Warriors’ 2002 squad.
"Jen went each game and marked each opponent’s top scoring threat and usually shut them down," explained Arneaud.
