Thursday - Saturday, May 10-12, PSAC Track and /Field Championships at Shippensburg

The Warriors will join the 13 other state universities in the PSAC Track and Field Championships Thursday through Saturday at Shippensburg. ESU will be seeking to improve on last year's fourth-place women's finish and tenth-place men's finish.

 

Baseball (23-19-1, 11-11 PSAC Eastern Division)

Righthander Craig Whitten (Jr., Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) fired a no-hitter as the Warriors won four of seven games last week to finish with a winning record at 23-19-1. Nine of the losses were by one run and two others were by two runs.

Whitten, making his first start of the season, held New Jersey Tech hitless in a 10-0 win. He struck out nine batters and had two walks and three hit-batsmen. He retired 11 straight batters from the fourth to the seventh innings. He had previously made eight relief appearances. He finished the season with a 2-1 record.

The Warriors got three other strong pitching performances during the week. Troy Hayes (Fr., Marshalls Creek, Pa./East Stroudsburg), also making his first start, hurled six shutout innings, allowing seven hits, in a 17-8 win over Scranton.

Jason Ryan (Jr., Queensbury, N.Y./Glens Falls) gave up one run and eight hits as the Warriors shaded Millersville, 2-1, in their final game. He finished strongly, striking out the side in the seventh inning and finished with five strikeouts. His season record was 5-4 and his earned-run average was 3.41.

Gordy Kocher (So., Northampton, Pa./Northampton) posted the team's best record at 5-2 and the top earned earned-run average at 2.28. He went the route in a 12-3 win over Shippensburg, giving up seven hits and three runs.

The ESU pitching staff completed a school-record 23 games with Kocher and Ryan having six apiece and Mike Zimorowicz (Jr., Scranton, Pa./West Chester) and Ryan Amey (Fr., Bethlehem, Pa./Emmaus) five each.

Second baseball Tadgh LaBar (Jr., Hope, N.J./Belvidere) was the top hitter during the week, batting .489 with 15 hits in 31 at-bats, 12 runs-batted-in, two homers and two double. He was 5-for-10 with six RBIs, a double and a homer in a doubleheader against New Jersey Tech and then was 5-for-7 with five runs-batted-in and a homer in the victory over Scranton.

Third baseman Ryan Hatfield (So., Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) also had a big week with a .440 average on 11 hits in 25 attempts with three doubles, a triple and a homer. He doubled in the winning run in the 2-1 victory over Millersville.

First baseman Bryan Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) hit safely in six of the seven games although he batted 'only' .346 (9 for 26). He finished the season with a team-leading .430 average on 64 hits in 149 at-bats and had a school-record 64 RBIs. The old mark was 47 RBIs.

The Warriors split eight of their 12 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheaders and finished 12-12 in the conference, posting a 3-1 mark over West Chester and Mansfield, dividing 2-2 with Millersville, Bloomsburg and Shippensburg and losing four times to division champion Kutztown.

Softball (19-21, 10-14 PSAC Eastern Division)

First-game pitcher Tina Morak (So., Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) hurled a three-hit shutout and second-game pitcher Monica Sobolesky (Fr., Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) gave up only one earned run as the Warriors close their season by sweeping New York Tech.

Morak spun her third shutout the season in a 3-0 victory and finished with a 9-11 record. Sobolesky allowed eight hits and single runs in the fifth and sixth inning in evening her season record at 10-10 and lowering her earned-run average to 1.87.

Outfielder Tara Buckley (So., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) was the leading hitter, going 3 for 6, scoring two runs and batting in another in the doubleheader. Catcher Erika Lee (So., Glenside, Pa./Abington) hit a solo homer in the first game.

Second baseball Deana Geist (Jr., Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) finished as the team's leading hitter with a .294 average. She also was the leader in runs scored with 18 and stolen bases with six. She was the only player to have a plus walk-to-strikeout ratio with ten walks and eight strikeouts.

Buckley had the most hits with 31 in batting .274 and belted the most extra-base with nine doubles, a triple and a homer. Lee led the team in runs-batted-in with 21.

Women's Lacrosse (7-8, 2-4 PSAC)

Senior attack wing Kim Niles (Sr., New Britain, Pa./Central Bucks West) set a career assist record and scored her 100th career goal as the Warriors closed their season with a 15-10 win over Rowan.

With the team behind, 7-5, at halftime, Niles took charge in the second half with two assists to give her 68 for her career and two goals for a career total of 101. The Warriors outscored Rowan, 10-3, over the last 30 minutes.

Antonia Giannopoulos (So., Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) scored three goals and had one assist and was the team season leader with 35 goals and 15 assists. Niles was second with 30 goals and 14 assists. Michelle Cottiers (So., Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) also scored two goals and and had two assists wound up with a season total of 26 goals and nine assists.

Goalie Kelly Wagner (So., Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) made 19 saves and finished the season with 222 saves for an average of 14.8 per game. She had a 57.5 percent save average.

Women's Track and Field (4-1)

The Warriors' three senior standouts, Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./William Allen); Cheryl Griffin (Sr., Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) and Quanette Jester (Sr., Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) are ready for this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship meet. All three were double winners in a quadrangular at Kutztown, the last tuneup before the conference meet.

Ross turned in her best outdoor performances of the season in winning the 400-meter hurdles in 61.89 and the high jump at 5-6. Both marks bettered the provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.35.

Griffin swept to victory in the 100-meter dash in a season-best time of 12.24 and in the 200 dash in 25.40. Jester was first in the long jump with a leap of 17-11, her best of the season, and the triple jump at 37-3 ½.

Jenn Grube (Sr., Easton, Pa./Wilson) was a runner up in two events, the discus with a throw of 115-8 and the javelin at 138-4.

Also placing second were Mikaela Thorne (Fr., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) in the shot put with a team season-best throw of 36-8 ½; Kelli Strickler (Jr., Stowe, Pa./Pottsgrove), high jump, 5-1; Christel Hibbard (Jr., Springville, Pa./Elk Lake), 1,500 run, 4:59.56, and Nova Tindall (Jr., Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), 5,000, 20:40.1.

 

Men's Track and Field (4-1)

Brian Bacher (Sr., Allentown, Pa./Parkland) won the shot put with a throw of 45-4 for the Warriors' lone men's victory in a quadrangular meet at Kutztown.

Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) turned in the team's best time of the season of 10.87 in the 100-meter dash in tying for second place. He also finished second in the 200 dash in 22.25. Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) was runner up in the long jump at 21-6 1/2 and tied for second in the high jump at 6-6.

Other second-place finishers were Darryl Brown (Fr., Avondale, Pa./Kennett Square), 3,000 steeplechase, 10:17.81; Mike Webster (Jr., Reading, Pa./Exeter), 5,000, 16:41; David Dean (Fr., Long Valley, N.J./West Morris), javelin, 189-3, and Brian Holcovic (Jr., Mitchell, Neb./Mitchell), pole vault, 15-0.
