Last Week's Results: NCAA Division II Championships at SIU-Edwardsville
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jenn Grube (Sr., Easton, Pa./Wilson) and Quanette Jester (Sr., Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) both gained All-America honors in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at SIU-Edwardsville.
Grube repeated as an All-America by finishing sixth in the javelin with a throw of 140-6. She beat the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion Brianna Bair of Lock Haven, who was seventh at 138-4. The event was won by Kateema Riettie of Southern Connecticut at 151-8.
Grube's throw was just shy of her season best of 140-9 achieved in the Penn Relays, but better than her 139-1 runner-up toss in the PSAC championships. Her career best was a school-record 146-7 in the nationals last year. She also had qualified for the nationals as a freshman, but did not place. She became the third ESU track and field woman to place in the outdoor nationals twice. The others were high jumper Karen Way, the national champion in 1991 and runner-up in 1990, and 1,500-meter runner Jan Blake, sixth in both 1995 and 1996.
Jester capped a sensational four-year collegiate career with a seventh-place All-America finish and a school record in the triple jump. She soared 39-5 3/4 which was close to four inches better than her previous school mark of 39-2 set in winning the event at the Millersville Metrics. Hillerie Shelton of Abilene Christian won the national title at 41-10.
Jester had placed second in the conference triple jump for the third straight year after winning the PSAC title as a freshman. She also placed four times in the conference in the high jump and three times in the long jump and scored 70 PSAC career points.
The top eight finishers in each NCAA event scored team points and received All-America certificates. Jester just missed placing in the high jump, tying for ninth with a leap of 5-3 3/4.
Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./William Allen) competed in two NCAA events. She did not advance from the trials of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 64.07 and failed to clear the opening height under rainy and dreary weather conditions in the high jump.
It marked the seventh straight year and 17th time in 18 years that the Warriors produced an All-America in track and field.
Men's Track and Field (4-1)
High jumper Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and javelin thrower David Dean (So., David Dean (So., Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) competed in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but did not place.
Newhard cleared 6-6 1/4 in the high jump to tie for 14th place while Dean threw the javelin 180-1 and finished 14th.
