Baseball Home Conference Doubleheaders Thursday and Saturday
The ESU baseball team will play a pair of home doubleheaders this week against PSAC opponents Shippensburg Thursday and Millersville Saturday, both starting at 1 p.m.

First baseman Matt Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) continued his productive hitting, but the Warriors won only one of four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball games last week.
Yagel batted .545 for the week at 6-for-11 with a triple and five singles and drove in seven runs. He now has 42 RBIs in the team's 22 games, an average of 1.9 per game and is hitting .473 at 35 for 74. He is only five short of the ESU season record of 47 RBIs set by Jeff Pfeiffer in 1985.
The team's lone win was a 9-4 second-game decision over West Chester in which Mike Zimrowicz (Jr., Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) pitched one-hit shutout ball for the last five innings. He struck out seven batters in raising his season record to 3-3. Tadgh LaBar (Jr., Hope, N.J./Belvidere) went 3-for-5.

The Warriors won three straight softball games, beating Kutztown, 6-4, in the second game of a doubleheader and then sweeping West Chester, 6-4 and 4-1, last week.
Tara Buckley (So., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) socked a bases-loaded, three-run double to provide the margin in the win over Kutztown. Monica Sobolesky (Fr., Bloomsburg. Pa./ Bloomsburg) pitched shutout ball for the last five innings to get the win.
Erika Lee (So., Glenside, Pa./Abington) belted a two-run double and Casey Dixon (So., Osceola Mills, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) was 3-for-4 in the first-game win over West Chester. Tina Morak (So., Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) allowed only two earned runs in gaining the pitching victory.
In the second contest with the team behind, 1-0, 'Nifer Shaw (Jr., Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning for the victory. Sobolesky tossed a six-hitter and didn't permit an earned run in raising her pitching record to 6-4.
Deana Geist (Jr., Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) hit safety in all four games last week and batted .400 at 6 hits in 15 at-bats with four runs scored and one RBI.

The Warriors scored a stunning 10-9 upset over Bloomsburg in a rematch of last year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game to highlight a 2-1 week.
Behind 9-5, ESU scored the game's last five goals with Antonia Giannopoulos (So., Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) tallying the game-winner with 1:07 remaining. Michelle Cottiers (So., Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) had tied the game with 2:09 left. Kim Niles (Sr., New Britain, Pa./Central Bucks West) scored three goals and had one assist. Winning goalie Kelly Wagner (So., Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) made 16 saves.
Earlier in the week, the Warriors beat Muhlenberg, 16-12, with Niles scoring six goals.

Men's Volleyball (9-10, 6-6 EIVA Hay Division)

The Warriors lost a pair of non-conference men's volleyball games last week. Brian Harvey (Sr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) improved his nation-leading dig average by making nine digs in 3-0 loss to Juniata and 21 in 3-2 defeat at New Paltz. He now 244 digs in 76 games for an average of 3.21 per game, best of any NCAA Division I or II player.
Dustin Wood (So., East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) was the hitting leader against Juniata with 21 kills. Tom Shaver (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) led the team against New Paltz with nine kills in 15 attempts and no errors for a .600 hitting average.

Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) and Brad Fees (So., Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) turned in career-best performances as the Warriors swept West Chester and Cheyney in a triangular meet.
Stinson won the 200-meter dash with his best-time ever of 22.2 and also captured the 100 dash in 11.13. He also ran a 49.3 anchor leg on the winning 4 x 400-meter relay team. Fees soared over the bar at 6-9, his best ever, to capture the high jump.
Three other ESU men won events with team season best marks. Glenn Kercher (Fr., Exeter, Pa./Exeter) was first in the triple jump at 43-8, Brian Bacher (Sr., Allentown, Pa./Parkland) captured the shot put at 44-9 1/2 and Brian Holcovic (Jr., Mitchell, Neb. / Mitchell) the 400-meter hurdles in 59.2.
Other ESU winners were David Dean (So., Long Valley, N.J./West Morris), javelin, 175-1/2; Jared Sparks (Fr., Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius), 3000-meter steeplechase, 10:30.4; Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), 110 hurdles, 15.4, and Mitch Carfora (Jr., West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area), pole vault, 13-6.

Quanette Jester (Sr., Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) swept the jumping events to lead the Warriors to victory in a triangular meet at West Chester. She won the long jump with a season-best leap of 16-10 and also captured the triple jump at 37-3 and the high jump at 5-2.
The Warriors had three other double winners in the meet. Angela Gray (Fr., Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) sprinted to first place in both the 100-meter dash in 13.08 and the 200 dash in 26.3. Jackie Babbini (So., Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) won the 400-meter hurdles in 66.39 and then upset her teammate, All-America Jenn Grube (Sr., Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) to take the javelin with a throw of 123-4 1/2. Grube still was a double winner with victories in the shot put, 34-9, and the discus, 115-6 1/2.
Also turning in team season-best performances with victories in the women's events were Lindsay Foster (So., Pitman, N.J./Pitman), who cleared 8-2 in the pole vault; Heather Bjorndahl (Jr., Coram, N.Y./Longwood) with a time of 2:26.88 in the 800 and Christel Hibbard (Jr., Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) at 18:56.1 in the 5,000.
