Thursday, Baseball DH vs. Kutztown; Softball DH vs. Mansfield

The ESU baseball and softball teams will be home Thursday for doubleheaders. The baseball squad will take on Kutztown at 1 p.m. at Mitterling Field while the softballers battle Mansfield starting at 3 p.m. on Zimbar Field.

 

Baseball (16-13-1, 8-8 PSAC Eastern Division)

Bryan Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) set a school record and Gordy Kocher (So., Northampton, Pa./Northampton) pitched another strong game as the Warriors split a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheaders last week.

Yagel, the team's first baseman, batted .467 with seven hits in 15 at-bats in the four contests. He had three doubles and a homer, drove in six runs and scored three. He lifted his RBI total to 52, breaking the school season mark of 47 set by Jeff Pfeiffer in 1985. He is batting .451 with 46 hits in 102 swings.

Kocher pitched his second straight three-hitter against Mansfield in a 14-2 ESU first-game win. He allowed only one earned run, struck out five batters and walked two. He lifted his season record to 4-1 and lowered his earned-run average to 1.89.

New starting leftfielder Blake Martin (So., Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain) hit safety in all four games last week with six hits in 12 at-bats for a .500 average. He had a double and a triple. Shortstop Brett Reynolds (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) was 5 for 11 for .455 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Centerfielder Matt Harmic (Sr., Brockway, Pa./Brockway) was 5 for 12 for .417 with a double and a homer, six runs-batted-in and five runs scored.

Harmic's two-run homer in the seventh inning provided the margin of victory in 7-5 first-game win over Bloomsburg. The Warriors split six of their first eight PSAC doubleheaders.

Softball (17-17, 10-10 PSAC Eastern Division)

Monica Sobolesky (Fr., Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) pitched a three-hit shutout and a four-hit, two-run victory and leftfielder Mary Beth Scotch (Sr., Scranton, Pa./Scranton) had big hits in three straight games as the Warriors swept a pair of straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheaders over Millersville and West Chester last weekend.

Sobolesky blanked West Chester in a 2-0 victory over her second shutout of the season. She also hurled the Warriors to an 8-2 over Millersville. She allowed only four earned runs in 22 1/3 innings last week for a 1.26 earned run average.

Scotch tripled in two runs to highlight a seven-run fifth-inning rally which propelled the team to the 8-2 win over Millersville. She singled in the winning run in the eighth inning in a 5-4 first-game win over West Chester and doubled in the first run in the 2-0 second-game victory. She was 4 for 7 with a double, triple and four RBIs in the twinbill against the Golden Rams.

Catcher Erica Lee (So., Glenside, Pa./Abington) also warmed up at the plate during the week, hitting safety in five straight games and going 7 for 18 for a .388 average.

Centerfielder Jill Higgins (Jr., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) was a star both defensively and offensively in the sweep over Millersville. She made a sensational diving catch in the seventh inning with the potential tying run on second base to preserve the 3-2 first-game win. She then tripled and scored the tying run to trigger the seven-run rally in the 8-2 second-game victory.

Women's Lacrosse (6-5, 2-2 PSAC)

Goalie Kelly Wagner (So., Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) made 37 saves as the Warriors won two women's lacrosse games last week.

She made 19 saves in a 13-8 victory over Philadelphia and 18 saves in a 13-4 win over Lock Haven. She boosted her season save average to 60 percent.

Antonia Giannopoulos (So., Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) scored three goals in each game to give her a team-high season total of 27 goals. Kim Niles (Sr., New Britain, Pa./

Central Bucks West) had two goals and one assist against Philadelphia and three goals and two assists against Lock Haven and is second on the team in scoring with 24 goals and 11 assists. She now has 65 career assist total to 65, one short of the school record of 66 set by Megan Macauley from 1997-2000.

Women's Track and Field (2-0)

Last Week's Results: Lafayette Invitational No Team Scoring

Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./William Allen) broke a school record and Cheryl Griffin (Sr., Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) returned to action with her best time of the season in the Lafayette Invitational.

Ross set a school mark in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.23 in placing third. She just nipped the old mark of 57.24 set by Michelle Cole in 1992.

Griffin, sidelined for three weeks with a hamstring pull, won the Lafayette 200-meter dash for the second straight year. Her time of 25.04 was her best of the season.

Christel Hibbard (Jr., Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) also set a school mark in placing third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:50.04. That bettered the NCAA Division II qualifying standard of 12:00 in the event.

Also placing third with Ross in the high jump at 5-4 1/2 and Quanette Jester (Sr., Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) in the long jump at 17-7 3/4.

Men's Track and Field (2-0)

Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) captured the high jump for the team's lone win in the Lafayette Invitational. He cleared 6-7.

Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) was second in the 200-meter dash in 22.17. He also combinedc with John Van Soest (Jr., Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), Tom Schultz (Fr., Marshalls Creek, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Andrew Morris (Fr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph) on a 4 x 100-meter relay team which was second in 42.83.

Placing third were Doug Springer (Jr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph) in the pole vault at 15-3 and David Dean (So., Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) in the javelin throw at 184-4.
