Warriors Take on West Chester in Three Sports This Week

The Warriors will face West Chester in three sports this week. The teams will meet in a baseball doubleheader on ESU's Mitterling Field Tuesday, a softball doubleheader at West Chester Wednesday and a women's lacrosse game on ESU's Whitenight Field Wednesday.

 

Baseball (11-6-1, 3-1 PSAC Eastern Division)

Jason Ryan (Jr., Queensbury, N.Y./Glen Falls) pitched a no-hitter and Gordon Kocher (So., Northampton, Pa./Northampton) and Ryan Amey (Fr., Bethlehem, Pa./Emmaus) fired back-to-back three hit shutouts as the Warriors won three of four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games last week.

Ryan blanked Bloomsburg in a 1-0 ESU victory, striking out six batters and walking three. He faced only 23 batters, two over the minimum, as one base-runner was erased in a double play. It was the home debut for the transfer from Schenectady Junior College, who is now 2-1 overall.

Kocher tossed his three-hitter in a 7-0 first-game victory over Mansfield. He struck out four batters and walked two. Amey duplicated the performance with a three-hit, three-strikeout, no-walk performance in a 5-0 second-game win over the Mounties.

The pitching staff's string of scoreless innings reached 25 as Danny Supey (Fr., Exeter Township, Pa./Wyoming Area) blanked New Jersey Tech for four innings before giving up a run in the fifth in a game the Warriors lost, 3-2.

The team's top hitters of the week were first baseman Bryan Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and shortstop Brett Reynolds (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast).

Yagel batted .429 with nine hits in 21 at-bats including nine RBIs. He went 4-for-4 with a double and three singles and batted in five runs in a 13-7 second-game win over New Jersey Tech. He is averaging almost two RBIs per game with 35 runs-batted-in in 18 contests and is hitting .460.

Reynolds had a team-leading .450 batting average in the six games last week with nine hits in 20 at-bats. He scored eight runs and has 27 runs in 18 games. He leads the team in hitting with a .474 average at 27 for 57.

Softball (8-8, 2-2 PSAC Eastern Division)

The Warriors stunned Bloomsburg, the nation's number one team, 4-3, in the second game of a doubleheader to highlight a 3-3 softball week. It marked the second straight year that ESU beat the Huskies at home, both times by 4-3.

Deana Geist (Jr., Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) and Tara Buckley (So., Pottsville, Pa./ Pottsville) were the game's heroes. With the team behind, 2-0, Geist belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Then after Bloomsburg tied the score, the Warriors won with a six-inning run as Buckley tripled and scored when the Huskies misplayed the relay throw.

Monica Sobolesky (Fr., Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg), who is from the Huskies' backyard, gained the pitching victory. Sobolesky also was the winning pitcher in a 7-2 victory over Holy Family, hurling no-hit ball over the last five innings.

Buckley also drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning single in a 4-3 second-game victory over Millersville. She went 3-for-4 in the game with a double and two RBIs. Erika Lee (So., Glenside, Pa./Abington) was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

For the week, Buckley was the team's leading hitter, batting .450 in the six games with nine hits in 20 at-bats including two doubles and a triple.

Men's Volleyball (9-8, 6-6 EIVA Hay Division)

Outside hitter Jason Hartzel (Sr., Souderton, Pa./Souderton) led the volleyball team to a pair of Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division victories last week.

Hartzel made 16 kills, 22 digs and five blocks as the Warriors stunned New York University, which was second in the division, 3-2. It was the team's first five-game victory after losing their previous five five-game matches.

Middle blocker Tom Shaver (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) contributed 13 kills and had the best hitting average at .417. Dustin Wood (So., East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) added 14 kills and 12 digs while Chris James (Jr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made 46 assists and Jarrett Merkel (So. Fayettesville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) six blocks.

Later in the week, the Warriors finished their EIVA season with a 6-6 record by downing Queens College, 3-1. Hartzel and Ryan Peters (Jr., Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) each had 15 kills. Brian Harvey (Sr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) made 15 digs.

First home Michelle Cottiers (So., Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and attack wing Antonia Giannopoulos (So., Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) were the big scorers as the Warriors split a pair of lacrosse games last week.

Cottiers scored five goals and Giannopoulos added three in a 12-10 win over Scranton.

Attack wing Kim Niles (Sr., New Britain, Pa./Central Bucks West) had two goals and three assists in the game. Later in the week, Cottiers and Giannopoulos each tallied three goals in an 11-7 defeat to Millersville.

Goalie Kelly Wagner (So., Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) made 14 saves against Scranton and 16 against Millersville and now has 72 saves in the five games against 58 goals allowed for a 55.4 percent save average.

Women's:

Quanette Jester (Sr., Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) won one event and tied for first in another in the 45-team, 1,300-athlete Army Track and Field Invitational. She captured the triple jump at 37-11 ½ and also tied for first in the high jump at 5-4 ½.

The Warriors won the 4 x 400-meter women’s relay in 4:00.34 with a team of Jen Eye (So., Aristes, Pa./North Schuylkill), 60.6, Cheryl Griffin (Sr., Walden, N.Y./Valley Central, 60.8, Angela Gray (Fr., Jersey City, N.J./Ferris, 60.7, and Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./William Allen), 57.9.

Ross was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 63.99 while Griffin took second in the 200-meter dash in 25.05 and fifth in the 100 in 12.62.

Jenn Grube (Sr., Easton, Pa./Wilson Area), an All-America in the event, and Jackie Babbini (So., Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) placed second and third in the javelin with throws of 133-11 and 128-10, respectively.

Babbini, Jester, Eye and Griffin ran on a 4 x 100-meter relay team which finished third in 49.60.

One ESU school record was set with Danielle Centurione (Sr., Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland) establishing a mark in placing third in the 3000-meter steeplechase, a new women’s event, in 12:09.3.

Men's:

Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) won the 200-meter dash over a field of 55 sprinters in the Army Invitational. He was timed in 22.4.

The Warriors also placed in three men’s field events. Doug Springer (Jr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and Brian Holcovic (Jr., Mitchell, Neb./Mitchell) tied for second in the pole vault at 14-9; Glenn Kercher (Fr., Exeter, Pa./Exeter) was third in the long jump at 21-10 ¼ and Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Brad Fees (So., Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) tied for fourth in the high jump at 6-5.

The men's 4 x 400-meter relay team of Andrew Morris (Fr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph), 50.8, Dan Garibaldi (Jr., Toms River, N.J./Toms River East), 51.3, Kercher, 51.8, and Jim Dawson (Fr. Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), 51.5, placed second in 3:25.4.
