Spring Teams Begin Home Action This Week

Three ESU spring sports teams will being home action this week. The baseball team will play host to Bloomsburg Wednesday at 1 p.m. on Mitterling Field while the softball team also will entertain Bloomsburg Thursday at 3 p.m. on Zimbar Field. The women's lacrosse team's first home game will be against Scranton Wednesday at 4 p.m. on Whitenight Field.

 

Baseball (7-4-1, 0-0 PSAC Eastern Division)

A school-record nine RBIs in one game by first baseman Bryan Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikallamy) and the hitting of shortstop Brett Reynolds (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) and second baseman Tadgh LaBar (Jr., Hope, N.J./Belvidere) highlighted a 2-2 week for the ESU baseball team.

Yagel was the power source in a 19-15 first-game victory over Aurora, Ill. in Fort Myers, Fla. He belted a grand-slam homer in the second inning, two-run singles in the fifth and eighth innings and a run-producing groundout in the first inning. He now has 26 runs-batted-in in the team's first 12 games and is hitting .476 (20 for 42 with two doubles, one triple and two homers).

Reynolds provided the margin of victory in a 13-12 second-game win over Aurora with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. The Warriors rallied from a 10-0 deficit for the win. For the week, he batted .533 with eight hits in 15 at-bats, scored six runs and drove in six. He took over the team batting lead at .486 (18 for 37 with 11 RBIs).

LaBar batted .500 at 7 for 14 for the four games with seven runs scored and four RBIs. He went 4-for-4 in the opener against Aurora with a homer and three singles. He is hitting .349 (15 for 43) for the season. Outfielder PJ Worsnick (Jr., Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) hit safety in all four games at 5 for 10.

Later in the week, the Warriors had their eight-game unbeaten streak (seven wins and a tie) broken in a double defeat to Allegheny, 3-2 and 5-2.

#Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Fla.

The Warriors swept a Rebel Spring Games doubleheader for the first time in five years during a 3-3 week. They beat LIU-Southampton, 1-0, and UMass-Lowell, 6-2, in back-to-back games, the team's first tournament sweep since 1996.

Tina Morak (So., Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) pitched a four-hit shutout against LIU-Southampton. She struck out three batters and didn't walk any. Sarah Kaplan (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) singled to lead off the fifth inning and later scored the game's lone run on a sacrifice fly by Erika Lee (So., Glenside, Pa./Abington).

In the win over UMass-Lowell, Lee drove in three runs with a single and a sacrifice fly and Casey Dixon (So., Osceola Mills, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) knocked in two runs with a single. Monica Soboleski (Fr., Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) didn't allow an earned run in gaining the pitching victory.

The Warriors also defeated Division I Stony Brook in their final tournament game, 5-4. Lee belted a two-run double in the sixth inning and Dixon drove her home with another double. Morak was the winning pitcher, giving up seven hits and three earned runs. Her record is now

3-2. Lee now has eight RBIs in the team's first ten games.

Women's Lacrosse (1-2, 0-0 PSAC)

Antonia Giannopoulos (So., Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) scored six goals as the Warriors defeated Wesleyan, 14-9, in a game played in Panama City, Fla. Later in the week, the team bowed to Bowdoin, 13-4, in its second Florida contest.

Giannopoulos, a transfer from the University of Maryland, also scored one goal against Bowdoin and has a team-leading season total of eight goals. Kim Niles (Sr., New Britain, Pa./Central Bucks West) scored two goals against Wesleyan and three against Bowdoin.

Jenna Feinblum (So., Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) had three assists in the two games. Goalie Kelly Wagner (So., Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) made 15 saves in each games.

Outdoor Track and Field (0-0)

Women's:

An indoor All-America, Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./William Allen) opened the outdoor season in spectacular style by winning three events at the Ram Invitational at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Ross captured the high jump with a leap of 5-6 1/2 and was first in both the 100-meter hurdles in 15.50 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.05. She gained All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in early March.

The Warriors' Quanette Jester (Sr., Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) won the triple jump with a 37-8 performance while Angela Gray (Fr., Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) sprinted to victory in the 400-meter dash in 59.14.

Jackie Babbini (So., Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) placed second to Ross in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.31. Jenn Grubb (Sr., Easton, Pa./Wilson) was third in the javelin with a throw of 132-10.

Men's:

Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) made a successful outdoor debut for the Warriors by winning the high jump at the Ram Invitational at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Newhard, who was first in four indoor meets, cleared 6-6. Teammate Brad Fees (So., Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville), the ECAC Division II indoor champion in the event, finished second, also at 6-6.

The Warriors had three third-place finishers in Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus), 200-meter dash, 23.33; Glenn Kercher (Fr., Exeter, Pa./Exeter), 400-meter dash, 51.49, and Barry Krammes (Fr., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville), javelin throw, 179-5.
