Four Teams Competing in Spring Vacation Action

Four ESU teams are practicing and playing in the south during spring vacation this week. The baseball team is in Ft. Myers, Fla; the softball team in the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Fla. and the women's lacrosse team in Panama City, Fla. The track and field teams are training in Raleigh, N.C. and will compete in Richmond, Va. Saturday.

 

Baseball (5-2-1, 0-0 PSAC Eastern Division)

First baseman Bryan Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) continued to drive in runs and righthander Mike Zimorowicz (Jr., Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) gained a big pitching victory as the Warriors won three games and tied one in Fort Myers, Fla.

Yagel batted in seven runs in four games last week to give him 16 RBIs in the team's first eight games. He is batting .556 with 15 hits in 27 at-bats.

Third baseman Ryan Hatfield (So., Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) is second on the team with a 445 batting average with 12 hits in 27 attempts after a 7-for-14 week. Shortstop Brett Reynolds (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./ Northeast) is next at .434 (10 for 23) after getting six straight hits with a double and five singles in a doubleheader sweep over Slippery Rock and Missouri-St. Louis.

Zimorowicz got the Florida trip off a good start Saturday as he hurled a four-hitter in a 7-1 win over Slippery Rock. He struck out nine batters and didn't allow a hit over the last 4 1/3 innings. The Warriors scored all their runs ins the fifth inning with the big hits, a two-run triple by Hatfield and a two-run single by Reynolds.

In the second game Saturday, the Warriors downed Missouri-St. Louis, 7-4, as Jason Ryan (Jr., Queensbury, N.Y./Glens Falls) went six innings on the mound, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Reynolds was 4-for-4.

The ESU nine made two sensational comebacks on Sunday to beat Ashland, 8-7, and to tie Davis and Elkins, 11-11. They rallied from a 6-0 deficit against Ashland and won the game as Matt Harmic (Sr., Brockway, Pa./Brockway) singled and came all the way around to score on Yagel's single in seventh inning.

They then rallied from a 11-2 score with nine runs in the seventh inning against Davis and Elkins. Nick Farkas (Fr., Walnutport, Pa./Northampton) drove in the tying run with a double and also had a run-producing single during the rally.

The Warriors gained its first-ever softball victory over Augustana, S.D., 2-1 in eight innings, during the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Fla. to highlight a 2-2. The Vikings had beaten ESU 11 straight times.

Tina Morak (So., Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) pitched a six-inning against Augustana for the victory while Tara Buckley (So., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) belted a pair of doubles and scored one run. Casey Dixon (So., Osceola Mills, Pa./Phillipsburg-Osceola) drove in the first ESU run with a single in the sixth inning and the winning run came across on an error in the eighth.

Buckley hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give the team a 3-1 victory over Georgian Court in the second game of a doubleheader for its only win. Monica Soboleski (Fr., Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg), making her collegiate debut, tossed a five-inning, allowing only one unearned run for the mound win.

The Warriors also bowed to Georgian Court, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader and lost to Merrimack, 9-0, in the Rebel Spring Games.

Men's Volleyball (7-8, 4-6 EIVA Hay Division)

The Warriors lost another five-game Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division match in bowing to LIU-Southampton, 3-2, last week. They are 4-6 in the league with five of the losses in five games.

Mike Messinger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) led the team's attack with 22 kills while Tom Shaver (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) had the best hitting average at .471 on 12 kills in 17 attempts and four errors. Jason Hartzel (Sr., Souderton, Pa./Souderton) made ten digs and Chris James (Jr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manius) had 53 assists.
