This Weekend, Baseball and Softball in Spring-Trip Games in Florida
The ESU baseball and softball teams will play ten games apiece in Florida starting this weekend. The baseball team will open action Saturday against Slippery Rock and Missouri-St. Louis in Fort Myers. The softball team's first Florida games will be Sunday against Augustana, S.D. and Merrimack in the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola.

Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./William Allen) placed sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5-5 3/4 to gain All-America honors at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston's Reggie Lewis Center.
Maresa Cadienhead of Abilene Christian, last year's runner-up, won the event at 5-11 3/4. Tonya Kneifl of South Dakota finished second and Beth Baldridge of Findlay third, both at 5-7 3/4.
Five jumpers cleared 5-5 3/4 with Jill Croft of UMass-Lowell and Julie Johnson of North Dakota tied for fourth after making it on their second attempt. Both had been clean up to that point, going over 5-3 3/4 on their first try.
Ross also made 5-5 3/4 on her second jump, but she had missed once at 5-3 3/4. Reidun Daily of Western, Co., and Bekcy Nyberg of North Dakota State tied for seventh, missing two jumps before clearing 5-5 3/4 on their final attempt. The top six finishers received All-America certificates.
The ESU senior had qualified for the meet with a career-best 5-7 1/4 in winning the high jump at the ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in ESU's Koehler Fieldhouse in late February.
It was Ross' second appearance in an NCAA national meet. She competed in the 400-meter hurdles at the outdoor championships last spring, but did not place.

Michelle Cottiers (So., Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) scored three goals, but the Warriors dropped a season-opening game to Longwood, 15-5. The contest was played on the Loyola College field in Baltimore.
Antonia Giannopoulos (So., Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Nicole DiGeronimo (Sr., Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) tallied the team's other two goals. Steph Wise Sr., Norristown, Pa./Norristown) had an assist.

Outside hitter Jason Hartzel (Sr., Souderton, Pa./Souderton) was the team leader as the Warriors split a pair of matches in the ESU Invitational last weekend. He made 17 kills and 11 digs in a 3-1 loss to Findlay Friday night and then had 12 kills, 11 digs and four blocks in a 3-0 win over New Haven Saturday.
Other stars against New Haven were middle blocker Tom Shaver (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) with seven blocks, opposite hitter Mike Messinger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) with 14 kills, nine digs and four blocks and setter Chris James (Jr. Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) with 38 assists, 11 digs and four blocks. Libero Brian Harvey (Sr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) made 14 digs.

First baseman Bryan Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) went 4-for-8 at the plate and drove in five runs as the Warriors swept a doubleheader over Columbia Union, 8-6 in nine innings, and 9-4.
With the team behind, 6-5, Yagel doubled to drive in the tying run in the top of the seventh inning of the opener. He then drove in one run as the Warriors scored twice in the ninth inning. He was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Brett Reynolds (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) was 2-for-3 while Matt Harmic (Sr., Brockway, Pa./Brockway) drove in three runs.
Righthander Mike Zimorowicz (Jr., Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) hurled the last four innings, allowing no runs and two hits while striking out four to get the pitching win.
In the second game, Yagel drove in three runs with another 2-for-4 performance. Harmic was 2-for-4, including a triple, and had two RBIs. Nick Farkas (Fr., Walnutport, Pa./ Northampton) was 2-for 3.
