Saturday, Basketball Doubleheader vs. Millersville, 6 and 8 p.m.; Men's Championship Soccer Team to be Honored
The Warriors will play their last Saturday night home doubleheader, taking on Millersville. The ESU men's soccer team which won its fourth straight PSAC title and reached the NCAA II Final Four will be honored during halftime of the men's game.

Forward Juwan Justice (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) scored 42 points and guard Gabe Crowley (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) had 40 points as the Warriors split two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division games last week.
Justice poured in 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Crowley added 20 points in a 77-62 victory over Kutztown. Guard Wayne Bishop (Fr., Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) contributed 13 points.
Crowley then hit 20 points again and Justice tallied 18 points, but the Warriors bowed to a huge Cheyney team, 74-62. The Wolves dominated the inside, scoring 25 of their 27 baskets on either layups or short jumpers.

Brad Kleckner (141, Jr., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) extended his dual match winning streak to five straight by winning two closes matches last week. He edged Ryan Wolverton of Millersville, 5-4, and Jacob Giamoni of Boston University, 3-1. He raised his record to 15-9.
Kevin Rake (133, Fr., Mountainhome, Pa./Pocono Mountain) and Marc Bauknecht (2985, Sr., Cheshire, Ct./Holy Cross) were also double winners last week. Rake won a major decision over Ben Miller of Milelrsville, 11-3, and then pinned Neil Sharma of BU in 55 seconds to push his record over the .500 mark at 12-11 with five pins. Bauknecht pinned Tyler Woolever of Millersville in 2:28 and then defeated Ed Strauss of BU, 4-1, and is now 17-12 with six pins.
The Warriors lost both matches last week by close margins. They bowed to Millersville, 21-19, rallying from a 15-13 deficit with wins in four of the last five matches but still falling short. They lost to BU, 22-18, when the Terriers' Zak Edmonds scored an escape after seven seconds of the second overtime period to beat Anthony Petrock (165, So., Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong), 6-5, in the final match.

Freestylers Erin Kowalik (Sr., Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Donna Gebhart (Sr., Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), competing in their final home meet, led the Warriors to a record-tying ninth dual meet victory with a 106-81 win over Mansfield.
The ESU swimmers finished the dual season with a 9-2 record, matching the victory total achieved by both the 1986 (9-3) and 1987 (9-4) squads. They will compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimming Championships Feb. 22-24 at West Chester.
Kowalik was a double winner in the 100 and 200-yard freeestyles. She was clocked in 55.16 in the 100 free, her second best time of the season, in edging the Mounties' top swimmer, Jaime Ragukonis, who was just a half second back in 55.72. In the 200, Kowalik swam home in 2:01.37, just over his season best of 2:01.09.
Gebhard sprinted to victory in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 25.34, leading a one-two-three ESU sweep in the event. She also anchored the winning 200-yard medley relay, combing with Heather Clouser (Jr., Wyommising, Pa./Wyommising Area), Mikaela Thorne (Fr., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and Karen Scott (So., Berwick, Pa./Berwick) for a 1:55.29 time, the team's best of the season.
Clouser won the 200-yard individual medly in 2:25.58 and was second in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best 1:02.45 which was under the former Koehler Fieldhouse pool record. Mansfield's Cristina Jacome broke the mark with a winning time of 1:00.97.

Forward Pam Helt (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) had a pair of double-figure scoring performances with 59 percent shooting, but the Warriors dropped two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division basketball games last week.
Helt tallied 11 points, making five of seven field goal attempts, and grabbed nine rebounds in a 68-46 loss to Kutztown. She then made five of ten shots from the floor and added three free throws for 13 points and pulled down five boards in a 67-62 defeat to Cheyney.
The Warriors had three other double-figure scorers against Cheyney with guard Megan Ross (Jr., Philadelpha, Pa./St. Hubert) tallying 16 points, Stephanie Kuhn (Sr., Columbia, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) 14 points with four 3-pointers, and Michele Pilenza (Jr., Delran, N.J./Delran) 10 points.

The Warriors hit .443 as a team to win their home over New Jersey Tech, 3-1. Later in the week, they bowed to St. Francis, Pa., 3-2, in an Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division opener.
Mike Messinger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) had the most kills against NJIT with 20 and hit .371. Jason Hartzel (Sr., Souderton, Pa./Souderton) added 16 kills with a .406 hitting average followed by Dustin Wood (So., East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield), 13 kills, .455 mark, and Tom Shaver (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock), 10 kills, 692 average. Shaver was the leader in blocks with nine including six solos.
Setter Chris James (Jr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) made 65 assists, an average of better than 16 per game, while libero Brian Harvey (Sr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) had 19 digs.
Against St. Francis, Messinger was tops with 25 kills while Hartzel made 20 and hit .341. The team hit only .199.

Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) were individual winners for the ESU men in the second annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational in the Koehler Fieldhouse.
Newhard soared over the bar at 6-9 1/4 to win the high jump. That surpassed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships March 9-10 in Boston. Stinson was first over 48 competitors in the long jump with a leap of
22-3 1/4.
The Warriors had two other place-winners in the high jump with Brad Fees (So., Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) second at 6-8 and Dave Apgar (So., Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany) fourth at 6-6. Doug Springer (Jr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph) tied for third in the pole vault at 14-0.

Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) anchored a record-breaking winning 4 x 400-meter relay team, won one event and finished third in two others in the Dick DeSchriver Indoor Track and Field Invitational Sunday in Koehler Fieldhouse.
Ross ran a 58.4 anchor leg in combining with Jenn Eye (So., Aristes, Pa./North Schuylkill), 61.2; Cheryl Griffin (Sr., Walden, N.Y./Valley Central), 59,3, and Angela Gray (Fr., Jersey City, N.J./Ferris), 60.4, on a quartet which sprinted to a record time of 3:59.08. The old school mark was 4:02.60 set earlier this season. Three of the runners, Ross, Eye and Griffin, were members of the Warriors' Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship 4 x 400-meter relay team last spring. Gray is a freshman.
Individually, Ross cleared 5-6 to win the high jump, placed third in the 400-meter dash in 58.86 and third in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.68.
Griffin was second in both the 55-meter dash in 7.24 and the 200 dash in 25.55. Also placing second were Christel Hibbard (Jr., Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) in the mile in 5:20.24 and Becky Fitz (So., Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) in the triple jump at 35-5 3/4. Hibbard was third in the 1,000-meter run in 3:13.90.
