EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Brad Fees and Mark Stinson, Track and Field - Both won events with meet-record, career-best performances in ESU's third annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational. Fees captured the high jump at 6-10 and Stinson the long jump at 23-0.

 

UPCOMING HIGHLIGHT HOME ATHLETIC EVENT

Sat., Feb. 16th, 100th Anniversary of Basketball Celebration

East Stroudsburg University will celebrate its 100th anniversary of basketball Saturday, Feb. 16th. Both the ESU men's and women's basketball programs started at the East Stroudsburg Normal School in 1902. The day will start with a celebration luncheon at 12:30 p.m. in the university dining hall. Alumni games will be played from 3 to 5 p.m. At night, there will be a buffet dinner and halftime ceremonies honoring former players and coaches during the Warriors' basketball doubleheader against Bloomsburg. Women's Basketball (6-13, 2-4 PSAC East)

Center Vanessa Kraft (So., Royersford/Spring Ford) and forward Tiffany Barnes (Jr., Middletown, Pa./Middletown) continued their strong scoring as the Warriors split a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games last week.

Kraft scored 15 points, making 8 of 10 free throws, in a 49-46 win over Cheyney after tallying 11 points in an 81-65 loss to Kutztown. She has scored 67 points in the team's last six games with four double-figure efforts.

Barnes had 12 points and nine rebounds against Cheyney after hitting for eight points in the Kutztown game. She has scored 77 points in the last six contests, also with four double-figure performances.

Guard Megan Ross (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) contributed 13 points against Kutztown while guard Niki Cox (Fr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) had a career-high 12 points.

Women's Swimming (7-2)

Natalie Weingartner (Fr., Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.40 and tied for first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.47 as the ESU women's swimming team closed its dual-meet season with a 7-2 record by beating Mansfield.

The Warriors had four other winners in Mikaela Thorne (So., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham), 50 freestyle in 26.95; Linzi Reese (Fr., Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), 100 freestyle in 58.34; Jamie Miller (Sr., Northampton, Pa./Northampton), 100 butterfly in 1:02.45, and Bridget Flack (So., Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock), 1000 freestyle in 11:46.71.

The Warriors won one of three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference away games last week, beating Kutztown, but losing to Bloomsburg and Cheyney.

Guard Dave Fedorka (So., Colver, Pa. (Central Cambria) made a 3-pointer with 1:46 remaining to break a tie and provide the winning margin in a 54-48 win over Kutztown. He finished with 14 points.

Guard Wayne Bishop (So., Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) was the top scorer for the week with 41 points, including seven 3-pointers. He scored 18 points against Cheyney, 16 against Bloomsburg and 7 against Kutztown.

Wrestling (6-7)

Marc Bauknecht (285, Sr., Cheshire, Ct./Holy Cross) scored a pin and had a major decision and Matt Dudeck (157, So., Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) won two major decisions as the Warriors split a pair of matches last week. They beat Shippensburg, 36-7, after losing to Millersville on criteria G, most near fall points, after the two teams had tied, 19-19, and had the same number and type of matches won.

Bauknecht decked Tyler Woolever of Millersville in 1:47 and defeated Jeff Hannum of Shippensburg, 11-2. He had lost to Woolever, 12-9, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships. Dudeck had wins over Joey Lovello of Millersville, 10-1, and Andy Martin of Shippensburg, 15-5.

The Warriors had three other double-winners in Keith Kleckner (149, So., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville), Brandon Mihalko (165, Fr., Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Dan Roy (174, Sr., West Belmar, N.J./Wall).

Kleckner downed Shawn Blanchard of Millersville, 14-7, and pinned Zach Leathers of Shippensburg in 4:59. Mihalko raised his season record to 18-4 with victories over Craig Pequignot of Millersville, 9-4, and Luke Cummings of Shippensburg, 13-3. Roy upped his season mark to 17-7 by beating Chris Yeager of Millersville, 5-1, and winning a technical fall over Aaron Telatovich of Shippensburg, 22-7 in 7:00.

Mark Stinson (Jr., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) and Brad Fees (Jr., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) leaped to career-best, record-breaking performances for the Warriors' only individual victories in the third annual Dick DeSchriver Indoor Track and Field Invitational in the Koehler Fieldhouse.

Stinson won the long jump for the second straight year with a leap of 23-0, bettering his own meet record of 22-3 1/4 set last year. Fees cleared 6-10 on his first attempt to capture the high jump. He won on fewer over two competitors including teammate and third-place finisher Mike Newhard (So., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), who had won the event last year with a record 6-9 1/4 jump.

The Warriors repeated as the 4 x 400-meter women's relay champions with a time of 4:03.32. Jackie Babbini (Jr., Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) led off with a 62.5 followed by Kristin Mullin (Jr., East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) 61.3 and Jen Eye (Jr., Aristes, Pa./North Schuylkill) 60.2 with Angela Gray (So., Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) bringing it home in 59.2. Eye and Gray had been members of the winning team last year.

ESU also won the 4 x 800-meter women's relay in 19:39.28 with a team of Melissa Werner (Sr., Reading, Pa./Exeter), Monica Schelling (So., Washington, N.J./Warren Hills), Mullin and Krystal Klugh (Fr., Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal).

One ESU men's relay team was first, the 4 x 800-meter quartet of Matt Bevan (So., Ashland, Pa./North Schuylkill, 2:05.1; Jim Dawson (So., Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), 2:03.2, Rob Thomas (Fr., Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), 2:00.3 and Darryl Brown (So., Kennett Square/Kennett), 2:02.8. Their time was 8:11.50

Other ESU top three individual finishers were pole vaulters Brian Holkovic (Sr., Mitchell, Neb./Mitchell), second at 13-6, and Bryan O'Neill (Somerville, N.J./Somerville), third at 13-0.

Placing second were the 4 x 200 men's relay of Stinson, 22.9, Dan Garibaldi (Sr., Toms River, N.J./Toms River East), 23.1, John Van Soest (Sr., Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn) 23.3 and Newhard, 22.7, second in 1:32.14, and the 4 x 400-meter men's relay of Garibaldi, 51.9, Dawson, 51.7, Bevan, 51.9, and Stinson, 50.7, second in 3:25.8.

Men's Volleyball (3-2)

Outside hitter Jon Stellefson (Fr., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made the winning kill in the key third game as the Warriors fought off two matches and rallied from a two-game deficit to outlast New Paltz, 3-2.

Stellefson put down the 37th point to finish a third game 37-35 victory. Outside hitter Ryan Peters (Sr., Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) also was a star during the game and finished with a match total of 21 kills.

Outside hitter Dustin Wood (Jr. East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) was the team leader in kills with 22 and digs with 14. Middle blocker Mike Collins (Sr., Morrisville, Pa./ Pennsbury) had 11 kills in 17 attempts with only two errors for .529 hitting average.

Brian Harvey (Sr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) made 13 digs, middle blocker Jarrett Merkel (Jr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) seven blocks and setter Chris James (Sr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) 61 assists.
