Saturday-Sunday, ECAC Division II Track and Field Meet at ESU

The Warriors will play host to the annual ECAC Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. The pentathlon will be Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. with all other events Sunday with the field events beginning at 9 a.m. and the running events 10 a.m. in the LeRoy J. Koehler Fieldhouse.

 

Men's Basketball (11-14, 4-7 PSAC Eastern Division)

Forward Juwan Justice (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) had a pair of double-doubles as the Warriors won one of three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division games.

Justice scored 21 points and grabbed ten rebounds in a 70-62 victory over Kutztown. He then had 20 points and pulled down 11 boards in a 71-61 loss to Bloomsburg.

Forward Shahad Abdur-Rahkman (So., Allentown, Pa./William Allen) tallied in double figures in all three games last week. He had 15 points in a 72-47 loss to West Chester, 20 points against Kutztown and 14 against Bloomsburg. He has scored in 'doubles' in the last six games and eight of his last nine contests.

Center Jon Kelley (Fr., West Chester, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds and made four assists in helping the team to victory over Kutztown.

Forward Kelly Hutchison (Sr., Reading, Pa./Exeter) scored 30 points as the Warriors bowed to three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents last week.

Hutchison tallied ten points against West Chester, six against Kutztown and 14 against Bloomsburg. She has scored in double figures in 19 of the team's 25 games.

The Warriors only had one other double-figure scoring effort during the week with forward Pam Helt (Sr., Reading, Pa./Exeter) tallying 14 points against Kutztown.

Women's Swimming (9-2, Ties School Victory Record)

Ten members of the ESU swimming team will be competing in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships Thursday through Saturday at West Chester.

The team has two returning place-winners in Karen Scott (So., Berwick, Pa. /Berwick); who was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, and Heather Clouser (Jr., Wyomissing, Pa./ Wyomissing), 12th in the 100-yard backstroke. Three swimmers, Erin Kowalik (Sr., Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), Donna Gebhard (Sr., Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Scott. are back from a 200-yard freestyle relay team which was fifth in the conference last year.

Wrestling (6-13)

The Warriors ended their dual-match wrestling season on a successful note by trouncing Wilkes, 37-6. Their next competition will be in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships at the University of Pennsylvania March 3-4.

Kevin Rake (133, So., Mountaintop, Pa./Pocono Mountain) and Brad Kleckner (141, Jr., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) scored back-to-back first-period pins in the victory. Rake decked Eli Shutt in 45 seconds to lift his season record to 14-12. Kleckner needed only 1:05 to pin Bryan Wech for his eighth straight dual-match win which left him with a 18-9 record.

Dan Roy (174, Jr., West Belmar, N.J./Wall) scored a technical fall over Fritz Delva, 19-2 in 7:00. Danny Gonzalez (125, Fr., Bartonsville, Pa./Pocono Mountain) won a major over Dave Rudnick, 16-3, and Marc Bauknecht (285, Sr., Cheshire, Ct./Holy Cross) also had a major over Matt Zurn, 16-7. Bauknecht has the team's most wins in a 20-12 record.

Other ESU winners were Louie DeLauro (149, Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) and Matt Dudeck (157, Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), both of whom scored seven-point victories, Shawn Smith (165, So., Unityville, Pa./Hughesville) and Dan Madonna (184, Sr., Springfield, Pa./Springfield).

Men's Volleyball (4-3, 2-2 EIVA Hay Division)

The Warriors split a pair of matches last week, beating Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division foe Harvard, 3-0, after losing to non-conference rival New Paltz, 3-1.

Opposite Mike Messinger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) led a balanced hitting attack against Harvard with ten kills. Outside hitter Jason Hartzel (Sr., Souderton, Pa./Souderton) and middle blocker Tom Shaver (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) added nine kills apiece and outside hitter Dustin Wood (So., East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) eight kills. Hartzel had the best hitting average at .643.

The Warriors also turned in a strong defensive effort with Messinger tops with 13 digs followed by Brian Harvey (Sr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) with 12. Hartzel had five blocks. Setter Chris James (Jr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) made 36 assists.

Against New Paltz, Wood hit .560 with 25 kills whlie Hartzel had a .540 hitting average with 24 kills.

WOMEN

The Warriors' senior trio of Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh), Cheryl Griffin (Sr., Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) and Quanette Jester (Sr., Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) all won events at the Bears' Den Invitational at Kutztown University.

Ross was a double winner in the high jump with a season-best leap of 5-6 1/2 and in the 500-meter dash in 1:19.45. Griffin sprinted to victory in the 200 in 25.63 and tied for first in the 55 in 7.21, her season best. Jester, making her season debut, won the triple jump at 35-5, tied for third in the high jump at 5-1 and was fourth in the long jump at 15-5.

Jenn Eye (So., Aristes, Pa./North Schuylkill) was runner-up in the 200 at 26.99 and fourth in the 55 at 7.58. Also placing second was the Warriors' 4 x 400-meter relay team of Heather Bjorndahl (Jr., Coram, N.Y./Longwood), 65.9; Melissa Werner (Jr., Reading, Pa./Exeter), 66.5; Monica Shelling (Fr., Washington, N.J./Warren Hills), 67.9, and Christel Hibbard (Jr., Springville, Pa./Elk Lake), 69.1.

Jenn Grubb (Sr., Easton, Pa./Wilson) was third in both the shot put at 34-11 and the weight throw at 41-4. Angela Gray (Fr., Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) was third in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.97.

 

MEN:

Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) won individual events for the Warriors in the Bears' Den Invitational at Kutztown University.

Newhard cleared 6-5 to win the high jump competition while Stinson captured the 200-meter dash in 23.20. The Warriors' 4 x 400-meter relay team of Dan Garibaldi (Jr., Toms River, N.J./Toms River East), 54.1, Andy Morris (Fr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph), 51.7, Jim Dawson (Fr.., Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), 53.5, and Mitch Carfora (Jr., West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area), 52.7 also took first in 3:31.90.

Doug Springer (Jr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph) was second in the pole vault at 14-6. Mike Loesner (Fr., South Plainfield, N.J..South Plainfield) placed third in the 3,000, 9:24.39, while Brad Fees (So., Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) tied for third in the high jump at 6-3.

First baseman Bryan Yagel (Jr., Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) made an impressive collegiate debut, but the Warriors dropped a season-opening doubleheader at Longwood, 6-2 and 12-5.

Yagel, a transfer from Penn State-Wilkes-Barre, went 3 for 6 at the plate with a double and two singles and four RBIs in the twinbill. He also scored two runs. Second baseman Tadgh LaBar (Jr., Hope, N.J./Belvidere) was 3 for 7 and third baseman Ryan Hatfield (So., Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was 2 for 6 with a double and two RBIs.

Righthander Jason Ryan (Jr., Queensbury, N.Y./Glens Fall) turned in the top pitching performance, going two innings in the opener and allowing one run and two hits while striking out four batters. Ryan is a transfer from Schenectady Community College).
