Men's Soccer (18-3-2, 8-0 PSAC)

Last Week's Results: Barry (A) 1-2L (NCAA Division II Semi-Finals)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Warriors made their first NCAA Division II Final Four appearance, but bowed in the semi-finals to host Barry University, 2-1, Friday night.

Barry's winning goal was scored by Fitzgerald Clarke with under 20 minutes remaining. Carrington Brown set up the play by dribbling the ball down the right side and then crossing a pass to Clarke at the far post.

After a scoreless first half, the Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead with 5:50 gone in the second half. ESU tied the score six minutes later as Sean Stewart (So., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Munro College) connected after a free kick by Eric Kolar (So., Fredericksburg, Pa./Tulpehocken). Stewart took the ball at the right side of the goal and drilled a shot around the goalie.

The Warriors had three opportunities to tie the score in the final ten minutes. The best was on Stewart's free kick from just outside the box which appeared to be carrying into the upper right corner of the nets. Goalie Ron Goguen literally "took it out of the corner," according to ESU head coach Jerry Sheska, and secured the team's victory.

The game was evenly played with Barry having a slight 16-13 edge in shots. Both corner kicks at 6-6 and goalie saves at 3-3 (Goguen and ESU's Jason Land (Jr., Carney's Point, N.J./St. James) were identical.

Stewart and Karl Nusshag (Sr., Media, Pa./Penncrest), the team's anchor in the midfield, made the All-Final Four Tournament team.

The Warriors ended the season with an 18-3-2 record, tying the school mark for most wins in a campaign. They won their fourth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title and eighth in nine years and captured their first NCAA Division II regional crown.

There are only four seniors on the squad in Nusshag, starting outside back Erik Buksa (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), reserve outside midfielder Ryan Hepford (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) and back-up goalie Conor Fry (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield).

Cal State Dominguez Hills won the national title by beating Barry, 2-1, on Victor Guerrero's goal, his second of the game, with 11:16 left in the fourth and final overtime period.

The Toros, the nation's top-ranked team going into the tourney, finished with a 23-1-1 record.
