The Warriors, led by unbeaten Dan Roy (174), will open its home dual match season against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent Army Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Koehler Fieldhouse.

 

 

Women's Basketball (3-4, 0-0 PSAC East)

Forward Tiffany Barnes (Jr., Middletown, Pa./Middletown) was named the tournament's outstanding player as she led the Warriors to their first Rotary Pocono Classic title in three years with a 59-54 win over New Haven in the championship game. She scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, both career highs. She hit on 7 of 14 shots from the floor and one of two foul shots and had 14 defensive boards and three offensive.

Vanessa Kraft (So. Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) also made the All-Tournament team after chipping in with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists in the title game. Michelle Pilenza (Sr., Delran, N.J./Delran) had 11 points and four assists and Heather Wolfe (So., York Haven, Pa./Red Land) fed off a team-high five assists.

Barnes, Kraft and reserve center Jess Wapinsky (Fr., Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) worked on defense to hold New Haven's Niketa Harris, who was averaging 21 points per game, to ten points on 4 for 15 shooting.

In the first round, the Warriors beat Green Mountain, 72-67, as Wolfe and Dana Thompson (So., New Egypt, N.J./Allentown) each scored 16 points while Kraft added 13 points and Pilenza 10.

Juwan Justice (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and Jon Kelley (So., West Chester, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) both made the All-Tournament team as the Warriors placed third in the Panaia-Soloway 37th Rotary Pocono Classic.

Justice, a repeat selection on the All-Tourney team, scored 34 points in the two games with 15 in a 55-54 loss to Bloomfield and 18 in a 62-49 win over New Jersey Tech. Kelley

pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and scored eight points against Bloomfield and had nine points, eight rebounds and four assists in the New Jersey Tech game.

David Fedorka (So., Colver, Pa./Central Cambria) also scored in double figures in both games with 14 points against Bloomfield and 12 against NJIT.

Dan Roy (174, Sr., West Belmar, N.J./Wall) remained undefeated in scoring the team's only win in a 41-3 loss to Navy. He edged Jeff Letchford, 2-1, in sudden death overtime for his seventh straight victory. Letchford came into the match with a 12-4 record.

There was only one other close match with Keith Kleckner (149, So., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) bowing to Pat Lukanich, 4-2.

Indoor Track and Field

Mike Newhard (So., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Mark Stinson (Jr., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) were the Warriors' two winners in the eight-team Blue and Orange Indoor Track and Field Open at Bucknell University.

Newhard won the high jump for the second straight week with a leap of 6-7 and also was second in the 55-meter high hurdles at 7.95. Stinson was first in the 55-meter dash in 6.55

Also placing second were Dan Garibaldi (Sr., Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) in the 500-meter dash in 1:08.35 and Brad Fees (Jr., Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) in the high jump, also at 6-7.

Third-place finishers were Holly Holtzinger (So., York, Pa./Central York), 3,000-meter run, 11:47.07, and Becky Fitz (Jr., Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), triple jump, 34-5.

Women's Swimming (3-1)

Last Week’s Results: Bloomsburg Invitational 2nd (5 Teams)

Freshman Natalie Weingardner (Fr., North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) broke a 16-year-old school record in the 200-yard breaststroke for her fifth school mark as the Warriors placed second, only three points out of first, in the Bloomsburg Invitational.

Weingartner won the 200 breast in 2:34.64, bettering the mark of 2:35.51 set by Kim Heller in 1985. She previously had set school records in the 50, 100 and 200-yard backstroke and the 200 individual medley. The versatile freshman also won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:58.10 and was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.60.

The team had two other double winners. Jamie Miller (Sr., Northampton, Pa./Northampton) captured the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.34 and the 200 butterfly in 2:23.05 and was second in the 400 IM in 4:58.57, less than a second behind Weingartner. Heather Clouser (Sr., Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) was first in the 500 freestyle in 5:29.63 and the 200 backstroke in 2:13.78 and was third in the 100 back in 1:02.88.

Also winning events were Natalie Harbold (So., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) in the 50 freestyle, 26.21, and Mikaela Thorne (So., Elkins Park, Pa/Cheltenham) in the 100 breaststroke, 1:13.30.

Other top-three place-winners were Linzi Reese (Fr., Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), third in both the 200 individual medley, 2:28.21, and the 200 butterfly, 1:04.52, and Karen Scott (Jr., Berwick, Pa./Berwick), third in both the 50 freestyle, 26.66, and the 100 free, 57.96.

The Warriors won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:57.84 with a team of Clouser, Thorne, Reese and Scott. Host Bloomsburg won the team title with 781 points, just edging ESU, which had 778. Millersville, 548; Lock Haven, 478, and Mansfield, 350, rounded out the field.
