EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Male – Dan Roy, Wrestling

Sr., 174 Pounds, West Belmar, N.J. (Wall) – Won 174-pound class at 35th ESU Wrestling Open. Scored four victories including a 3-2 win in finals.

Male – Juwan Justice, Basketball

Sr., Guard, Philadelphia, Pa. (Roman Catholic) – Joined 1,000-point club with 21 points in a season-opening 75-70 2 OT win over New Jersey Tech.

Women – Megan Ross, Basketball

Sr., Guard, Philadelphia, Pa. (St. Hubert) – Gained All-Tournament honors at Gannon. Scored 15 points in first game and had six assists in second.

vs. Edinboro, Slippery Rock, 1 and 3 p.m.

The Warriors will play two PSAC Western Division opponents in afternoon basketball doubleheaders, meeting Edinboro Dec. 1 and Slippery Rock Dec. 2. The women’s games will start at 1 p.m. with the men’s contests at 3 p.m.

Juwan Justice (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) became the 19th member of ESU’s men’s basketball 1,000-point club when he sank a final free throw in the final seconds of a 75-70 double overtime victory over New Jersey Tech. He finished with 21 points, giving him exactly 1,000. He made six field goal, including 3 three-pointers and 6 free throws. He also grabbed nine rebounds.

Guard Greg Crowley (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) made the go-ahead basket with 1:19 remaining in the second overtime to break a tie at 69. After NJIT cut the margin to one point, forward John Glenn (Fr., Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) dropped a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left and Justice converted a pair with two seconds to go.

Crowley finished with a game-high 24 points. Center Jon Kelley (So., West Chester, Pa./John Carroll) pulled down 12 rebounds.

Guard Megan Ross (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) scored 24 points and made eight assists as the Warriors split two games in the Avalon Tournament at Gannon University. She was named to the All-Tournament team.

Ross tallied a game-high 15 points and had two assists in a 67-52 loss to Merrimack and then netted nine points and a game-high six assists in a 77-49 win over Ohio Valley.

Center Tiffany Barnes (Jr., Middletown, Pa./Middletown) had eight points and eight rebounds against Merrimack and a double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds in the Ohio Valley contest.

Other leaders against Ohio Valley were center Vanessa Kraft (So., Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) with 12 points, guard Heather Wolfe (So., York Haven, Pa./Red Land) with 14 points, forward Dana Thompson (So., New Egypt, N.J./Allentown) with 12 points and eight rebounds and center Jess Wapinsky (So., Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) with 12 points.

Last Week's Results: 35th ESU Open No Team Scoring

Dan Roy (Sr., West Belmar, N.J./Wall) became the Warriors’ first ESU Open champion in three years when he won the 174-pound class at the 35th annual tournament in the Koehler Fieldhouse. A total of 337 wrestlers from more than 25 colleges competed.

Roy, third in both 1998 and 1999, defeated another ESU wrestler, red-shirt freshman Brandon Mihalko (Fr., Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), 3-2, on a takedown in the first period in the championship match. He earlier defeated Brad Shumlock of Boston College, 1-1 on a tie-breaker, Greg Chirieleison of Lehigh, 4-2, in sudden victory and Dusty Heist of North Carolina, 6-1. The last ESU champion was Jeremy Sluyter at 125 pounds in 1998.

Mihalko, who will join the ESU team in January, scored four victories, pinning Joe Hill of Lock Haven in 2:12 and winning decisions over Todd Brennan, unattached, 5-1; Brian Brittingham of Gloucester Community College, 8-6, and John Carr, unattached from ESU, 15-9.

Marc Bauknecht (Sr., Cheshire, Ct./Holy Cross) placed third at 285 pounds, winning by injury default over Matt Kenny of North Carolina in the consolation finals. He pinned Greg Peterson of Gloucester CC, 7:14 on a tie-breaker, in his first match, decisioned Anthony Livecchi of Lehigh, 5-1, in the quarter-finals and lost to Dawid Rechul of Harvard on a pin in 2:51 in the semi-finals.

Women's Swimming (1-0)

Last Week’s Results: Kutztown (A) 167-94W, with West Chester (N) 109-147L

Freshman Natalie Weingardner (Fr., North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) won both backstroke events in a triangular meet against Kutztown and West Chester. She captured the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.66 and the 200 back in 2:12.18.

The Warriors had three other individual winners in the meet. Karen Scott (Jr., Berwick, Pa./Berwick) sprinted to victory in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.6. Mikeala Thorne (So., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) was first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.40 and Jamie Miller (Sr., Northampton, Pa./Northampton) took the 200 individual medley in 2:22.43.

ESU also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:50.09 with a team of Heather Clouser (Sr., Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area), Lindsey Reese (Fr., Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), Weingarnter and Scott).
