Last Week's Results: Edinboro (A) 9-20L
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tailback Andre Castiglioni (Jr., Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) broke four school rushing records and tied another, but the Warriors bowed to Edinboro, 20-9, in a season-ending football game. The team finished with a 6-5 record, the school's first winning season in four years.
Castiglioni rushed for 115 yards in 21 carries to give him a season total of 1,160 yards, breaking the school record of 1,109 yards set by Stewart Ford in 1997. He averaged 116.0 yards per game, bettering the mark of 115.1 yards achieved by Pete Radocha in 1976.
It also was Castiglioni's sixth 100-yard game of the season, bettering the mark of five held by Pete Radocha, 1976; Ford, 1997, and Andre Myers, 1998. He also tied the record, held by Jim Snyder, 1978-80, for most 100-yard games in a career with his seventh.
With the 21 carries, Castiglioni finished the most rushing attempts in a single season with 220. The old mark was 208 by Rick Sterner in 1991.
Linebacker Kevin Nagle (Gr., Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) made eight tackles in the finale and finished with a season total of 125, second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference to the 130 by Jim Lukacs of California. Linebacker Rich Butcofski (Sr., Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) was the team leader against Edinboro with 12 tackles.
Quarterback Geoff Brobst (Jr., Fern Glen, Pa./Hazleton Area) completed 12 of 25 passees for 132 yards. Wide receiver John Kotarsky (Jr.. Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) caught six passes for 76 yards. Fullback A.J. Oliveri (So., Pittston, Pa./Pittston) scored the team's lone touchdown, his third in two weeks, on a one-yard plunge. Kicker Mike Berry (Jr., Clarks Summit, Pa./Southridge, Miami, Fla.) booted a 38-yard field goal.
Special teams mistakes, fumbles on a kickoff return and a punt return and a bad snap from center on a punt, gave Edinboro the ball inside the ESU 30-yard line three times and resulted in two touchdowns and a field goal.

Last Week's Results: #Dowling (A) 1-1T (ESU won 3-2 on penalty kicks) #NCAA Division II Tournament first round
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sweeper Sean Stewart (so., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Munro College) booted the ball into the back of the nets twice, including the game-deciding final penalty kick, and goalie Jason Land (Jr., Carney's Point, N.J./St. James) stopped two penalty kicks and seven other shots as the Warriors won a first round NCAA Division II playoff game over Dowling.
The teams battled for two and a half hours - regulation plus four overtime periods - to a 1-1 deadlock before going to penalty kicks.
Both teams converted their first kick with ESU forward Jorge Chapoy (So., Montclova, Mexico/Pequea Valley, Pa.) going second and tying the score at 1-1. The Golden Lions were wide on their second try and stopper Kamar Samuels (Fr., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Munro College) put the Warriors ahead, 2-1.
Land then took charge, stopping two straight Dowling attempts, but ESU also missed twice sending the shootout to the fifth and final players. The Golden Lions connected to tie the score at 2-2 leaving it up to Stewart, who drilled the ball into the right side for a 3-2 victory.
Dowling had taken a quick lead after only 1:15 of play on a corner kick which curled around Land into the nets. It broke the ESU goalie's string of 574 straight scoreless minutes. But after that, Land began a new streak, holding the usually high-scoring Lions without a goal for the final 148 minutes which included two brilliant saves in one-on-one situations.
Stewart tied the game with 16:53 gone, booting in a direct kick from 20 yards out. It was his second goal of the season.
Land was helped by outstanding support by his backline of Stewart at sweeper, Samuels, outside backs Erik Buksa (Sr., Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), playing in his fourth straight NCAA tournament, and Kurt Nusshag (Jr., Media, Pa./Penncrest) and defensive midfielder Eric Kolar (So., Fredericksburg, Pa./Tulpehocken), all of whom played the entire 150 minutes.
With the win, the ESU booters advanced to the quarter-finals and a game against New Hampshire College this weekend at a site to be announced. The Warriors have made the quarters five previous times in 1964 and 1965 in the NCAA Division I tournament and in 1972, 1973 and 1997 in the Division II event, but have never gotten to the Final Four.
