The Warriors played another close game, but bowed to Kutztown by one point 17-16) and two inches Saturday. Five of the team's six games have been decided by a touchdown or less, two of them in overtime, and the sixth contest had a ten-point difference.
After falling behind, 17-14, on a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter, the ESU gridders had three opportunities to score in the fourth quarter. They drove to the KU nine-yard line, but were stopped on three plays and then a 26-yard field goal attempt by Mike Berry (Jr., Clarks Summit, Pa./Miami Southridge) was blocked.
They came right back and got to the one-yard line, but Nate Pendry (Fr., Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) was stopped for no gain on third down and then quarterback Jeremy Palm (Jr., West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) missed by inches getting in on fourth down.
The Golden Bears gave up a safety when their punter intentionally ran out of the end zone and ESU took possession and drove back to the KU 24-yard line. A penalty stalled the drive and Berry's 41-yard field goal attempt with 1:27 remaining was wide left.
The ESU defense held Kutztown to a total of 208 yards and one touchdown and shut out the Bears' offense in the second half. Linebacker Kevin Nagle (Gr., Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) had one of his biggest games of the season with 14 tackles, including 12 solo hits.
Linebacker Rich Butcofski (Sr., Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) added 11 tackles with a sack. Nick Beisker (So., Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and Jeremy Brown (So., Centreville, Va./Centreville) intercepted passes and Chad Weaver (Sr., Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and Brian Holcovic (Jr., Mitchell, Neb./Mitchell) had fumble recoveries.
On offense, the Warriors piled up 217 yards rushing with Andre Castiglioni (Jr., Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) gaining 93 yards on 19 carries and Pendry 69 yards on 13 carries.
