Football (4-1, 3-0 PSAC East)

Quarterback Jeremy Palm (Sr., West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) ran for one touchdown and passed for another and linebacker Brian Holkovic (Sr., Mitchell, Neb./Mitchell) made 13 tackles, including four of the team’s seven sacks, as the Warriors downed Kutztown, 19-10.

Palm scored on a two-yard run with 4:26 left in the first half and then combined with wide receiver Larry Harrison (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) on a 21-yard TD pass play with 34 seconds to go before halftime to put the Warriors ahead, 12-7.

Both touchdowns were set up by halfback Michael Glover (So., Tabernacle, N.J./ Shawnee). He intercepted a pass and returned it 18 yards to the Kutztown 21-yard line to lead to the first TD. He then returned a punt 14 yards into the Golden Bears’ territory to the 48 which gave the offense field position for its second score.

Palm completed 10 of 22 passes for 121 yards. Tailback Andre Castiglioni (Sr., Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) posted his fourth 100-yard game of the season with 118 yards on 24 carries. Guard Jim Sodano (Sr., Madison, N.J./Bayley-Ellard) had the highest film grade of the offensive linemen at 80 percent.

Holkovic led a defense which limited Kutztown to 178 yards, 96 rushing and 82 passing.

His four sacks set the Golden Bears back 18 yards. He had seven solo tackles and six assists.

End Shaun Bowman (Sr., Yardley, Pa./Livermore, Ca.) and linebackers Phil DeCecco (So., Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and Matt Connell (Fr., Westwood, N.J./Westwood) also made sacks.

Punter Adam Hostetter (Sr., Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) punted five times for a 43.6-yard average with a long boot of 55 yards.

The Warriors moved above the .500 both overall (5-4) and in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (3-2) by beating Clarion, 4-0, in their lone game last week.

Julie Byrnes (Fr., Ambler, Pa../Hatboro-Horsham) put the team ahead after only 1:30 with an unassisted goal. Gwen Gemberling (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Kelly Gunther (Sr., Brick, N.J./Brick Township) added first-half goals while Kate Melcer (Fr., Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored in the second half.

Men's Soccer (8-3, 1-2 PSAC)

The ESU men’s soccer team continued to score big wins in non-conference competition, beating C.W. Post, one of the region’s top teams, 3-1. Earlier in the week, the Warriors downed Caldwell in a rescheduled contest, 7-0.

Chris Pinto (Sr. Glen Ridge, N.J./St. Benedict’s) led the team with a goal and an assist against C.W. Post while Brandon Smith (Forksville, Pa./Sullivan County) and Jason Cropper (So., D’Abadie, Trinidad/Fatima College) also scored. Smith’s goal, off a pass from Mike Lotocki (Jr., Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), broke a 1-1 tie in the 64th minute.

Tom Mustac (Sr., West Milford, N.J./Clifton) scored a pair of goals against Caldwell while Pinto, Cropper, Lotocki, Piscopo (Jr., Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) and Kamar Samuels (So., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Munro College) had one goal each.

The Warriors will play host to Dowling Sunday in a rematch of one of last year’s NCAA Division II tournament games, won by ESU, 1-1, 3-2 on penalty kicks.

The Warriors won only one of five matches last week, bowing to Kutztown, 3-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division match and then beating Pfeiffer, 3-2, and losing to Fairmont State, 3-0; Millersville, 3-1, and Concordia, 3-2, in the Clarion Tournament.

Sarah Brown (So., Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) was the team’s top player in the tournament, hitting better than .300 in all four matches. Overall, she finished with 51 kills in 112 attempts with 14 errors for a .330 hitting average. She added nine blocks.

In the lone win over Pfeiffer, April Mellott (Jr., Dover, Pa./Spring Grove), hit .396 with 24 kills in 53 swings and only three errors. Brown was next at .316 with 17 kills. Setter

Heidi Johnston (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) made 49 assists and had 24 digs.

Goalie Kelly Wagner (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) set a school record for career shutouts as the Warriors won three straight field hockey games last week to extend their winning streak to seven.

Wagner posted three shutouts with four saves in a 1-0 win over Rowan, three saves in a 2-0 decision over Philadelphia and four saves over 50 minutes in an 11-0 romp over Catawba. That gave her eight shutouts for the season and 22 ½ for her career, breaking the mark of 22 shutouts set by Katie Horst from 1997-99.

Michelle Butkus (Sr., Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) scored the lone goal in the win over Rowan after a pass from Jess Anders (Sr., Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite). Butkus and Steph Hippman (So., New Buffalo, Pa./Susquenita) tallied the two goals in the Philadelphia game with Anders getting the lone assist.

Eight different players scored against Catawba with Mardelle Swoyer (Sr., Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) , Kate Dideon and Sara Gorman (So., Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) tallying two goals apiece. Dideon also had two assists. Antonia Giannoupoulos (Jr., Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) had one goal and two assists.

Women's and Men's Cross Country (0-0)

Last Week's Results: Paul Short Inv. at Lehigh, Women 36th, Men 38th

Christel Hibbard (Sr., Springville,. Pa./Elk Lake) and Mark Donio (Sr., Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) led the Warriors in the annual Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh.

Hibbard placed 181st with a 6,000-meter time of 23:34. Teammate Erin Coyne (So., Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) was 192nd in 23:58. The team finished 36th with 948 points.

In the men’s race, Donio was 181st with an 8,000-meter time of 27:21. Next on the team was Rob Lado (Fr., Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) 193rd, 27:36. The Warrior men were 38th with 1,053 points.
