Sunday, Nov. 5th, PSAC Men's Soccer Championships at ESU, 1 p.m.

The Warriors will be seeking their fourth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men's soccer title when they play host to Lock Haven or California in the championship game Sunday.

Tailback Greg Vaughn (Fr., Madison, N.J./Madison) provided the yardage on offense and linebacker Kevin Nagle (Gr., Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and cornerback Michael Glover (So., Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee) both scored points on defense as the Warriors downed Cheyney, 35-14.

Vaughn rushed for 161 yards in 29 carries, scored one touchdown on a one-yard plunge and set up another with a 42-yard burst. He also had a 48-yard run. He was pressed into service when starter Andre Castiglioni (Jr., Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) because ill during the week and was unable to play.

The 5-7, 190-pound youngster ran behind the blocking of the team's huge offensive line headed by the left side of tackle Dan Bratton (Jr., Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and guard Jim Sodano (Jr., Madison, N.J./Bayley-Ellard). Sodano scored 84 percent in the film evaluations while Bratton had an 81 percent mark.

Nagle added two points to the ESU total when he tackled the Cheyney quarterback in the end zone for a safety. He finished with nine tackles and a pair of sacks for 18 yards. Defensive end Adam DeAngelo (So., East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) also had nine tackles and a pair of sacks for ten yards. Nagle is the conference leader in tackles with 104 while DeAngelo is first in sacks with 9 1/2 with Nagle second with eight.

Glover intercepted a pass on a Cheyney conversion try and returned it 95 yards for two points. He later picked off a Wolves' pass and ran it back 25 yards for a touchdown.

The Warriors also scored on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Jon Pry (Fr., Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) to wide receiver Mike Patrick (Sr., East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Strouds-burg) and a ten-yard run by tailback Jason Wimmer (So., Quakertown, Pa./ Palisades). Mike Berry (Sr., Clarks Summit, Pa./Miami, Fla. Southridge) booted a 29-yard field goal and four straight extra points.

Pry was seven for 11 passing for 102 yards. John Kotarsky (Jr., Whitehall, Pa./ Whitehall) was the leading receiver with three catches for 77 yards.

Women's Soccer (7-10, 4-6 PSAC)

The Warriors gave a good battle to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoff contender Bloomsburg in their only game last week, leading 2-1 with less than 12 minutes remaining, but the Huskies rallied for a 3-2 victory

It was the season finale for Coach Derek Arneaud's team which finished with a 7-10 record including a 4-6 conference mark.

Behind 1-0 to Bloomsburg, Tiffanie Savacool (So., Yardville, N.J./Hamilton West) tied the game with an unassisted goal with 22 minutes remaining. Gwen Gemberling (So., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) then scored after a pass from Justina Woolf (Jr., Womelsdorf, Pa./Tulpehocken) to put the Warriors ahead with 13:32 left. The Huskies tied the game again with 11:23 to go and tallied the game-winner with 8:28 remaining.

Women's Swimming (0-0)

Last Week's Results: Mansfield Relays 2nd (5 teams)

The Warriors won four relays in placing second of five teams in the season-opening Mansfield Women's Swimming Relays. Mansfield won the event with 112 points followed by ESU 108, Millersville and Lock Haven 68 and Juniata 56.

Jamie Miller (Jr., Northampton, Pa./Northampton) and Mikaela Thorne (Fr., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) each swam on three winning relays. The team victories were in the:

· 3 x 100-Yard Breaststroke - Miller, Trish Dixon (Fr., Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and Thorne, 3:42.47. Both Thorne with a time of 1:11.37 and Miller, 1:13.90, qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships.

· 800-Yard Freestyle - Miller, Erin Kowalik (Sr., Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), Maribeth Kenny (So., Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Heather Clouser (Jr., Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area), 8.29.14.

· 400-Yard Medley - Clouser, Thorne, Miller and Karen Scott (So., Berwick, Pa./ Berwick), 4:15.97. Clouser gained a berth in the PSAC meet with a 100 backstroke leg of 1:04.30.

· 200-Yard Freestyle - Donna Gebhard (Sr., Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Thorne, Kowalik and Scott, 1:43.07. Gebhard led off with a conference-qualifying 50 freestyle of 26.04.

Also making the conference meet were Kowalik, 50 free, 25.75, and Miller, 100 butterfly, 1:00.08.

Men's Soccer (16-2-1, 8-0 PSAC)

Forward Jorge Chapoy (So., Montclova, Mexico/Pequea Valley, Pa.) kept scoring and goalie Jason Land (Jr., Carney's Point, N.J./St. James) posted another shutout as the Warriors won two games last week to finish the regular season with a 16-2-1 record.

Coach Jerry Sheska's team has won nine straight games and will be seeking its fourth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship and eighth in nine years when it plays host to the title game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The opponent will be either Lock Haven or California, which will meet in the semi-finals Wednesday.

Last week, the Warriors beat Bloomsburg, 2-0, to finish with an 8-0 regular-season conference record for the second straight year and then edged New York Tech, 3-2, on Chapoy's goal with two minutes remaining in an overtime period.

Land notched his fifth straight shutout and seventh of the season in the Bloomsburg game. He made only three saves, but one was a diving stop on a free kick with the score still 1-0. The junior keeper has not allowed a goal in 482 minutes since Dowling scored early in the second half in a 2-0 game Sept. 27th. He is allowing 0.38 goals per game.

Chapoy scored the first goal against Bloomsburg. He now has a team-leading 19 goals in 19 games. Tom Mustac (Jr., West Milford, N.J./Clifton) booted in the second goal.

In the win over New York Tech, Brandon Smith (Jr., Forksville, Pa./Sullivan County) and Chris Pinto (So., Santz Cruz, Bolivia/St. Benedicts) had the goals in regulation with Mustac assisting on both of them. Mike Lotocki (So., Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) set up Chapoy's game-winning goal.

Men's Cross Country (3-1)

Last Week's Results: PSAC Championships at Slippery Rock 9th (13 teams)

Darryl Brown (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) placed 26th of 89 runners for the Warriors' top male finish in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships last weekend. He was timed in 28:22 for the 8,000-meter distance.

Brian Trentowski (Sr., Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) also made the top 30 with a 28th-place finish in 28:25. Also in the team's top five were Mark Donio (Jr., Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) 46th, 28:59; Jeff Callan (Sr., Glenside, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) 49th, 29:07, and Mike Webster (So., Reading, Pa./Exeter) 57th, 29:23. The team finished ninth of 13 schools with 206 points.

Women's Cross Country (1-3)

Christel Hibbard (Jr., Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) made All-Conference for the second straight year as she placed ninth of 82 finishers in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships at Slippery Rock.

Hibbard was timed in 23:52 for the 6,000-meter distance. She had been 11th in the PSAC race last year. She will be competing for a berth in the NCAA Cross Country Championships when she runs in the NCAA Regionals Saturday at Lock Haven. The top three teams plus two individuals not on those teams will advance to the nationals Nov. 18 at California-Pomona.

The ESU women placed tenth of 13 teams in the conference meet with 240 points. Danielle Centurione (Sr., Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was 46th in 25:33 followed by Erin Coyne (Fr., Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) 56th, 26:04, Nicole Royer (Jr., Bethlehem, Pa./Dieruff) 57th, 26:56, and Stacie Gallagher (So., Mount Carmel, Pa./Mount Carmel) 72nd, 26:56.

Women's Volleyball (15-13, 8-0 PSAC Eastern Division)

The Warriors remained unbeaten in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division by sweeping West Chester, 3-0, last week for their eighth straight conference win. They then beat Dowling, 3-1, but lost to Slippery Rock twice by 3-0 in the Dowling Tournament.

Outside hitter April Mellott (So., Dover, Pa./Spring Grove) was the leader against West Chester with 18 kills and a .486 hitting average. Middle blocker Sarah Brown (Fr., Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) followed with 11 kills and a .417 hitting mark. Ashleigh Reinert (Sr., Dover, Pa./Dover) made 27 assists in the first two games while Heidi Johnston (So., Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) had nine assists in the third game.

Mellott, Andi Myers (So., Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) and Reinert made the All-Tournament team at Dowling. Mellott had 14 kills and 14 digs in the win over Dowling. Myers starred in the second match against Slippery Rock with eight kills, 19 digs and five solo blocks. Reinert had 49 assists against Dowling and 29 and 17 in the two Slippery Rock matches.

Jackie Babbini (So., Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) starred in the Dowling match with ten kills, a .348 hitting average, five digs and three blocks.
