The Warriors will attempt to maintain at least a tie for second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division in a 1:05 p.m. Homecoming game against Cheyney. They are 3-1 in the division, tied with Kutztown behind first-place Bloomsburg, 4-0.

Football (4-3, 3-1 PSAC East)

The Warriors turned in a strong defensive effort, but still wound up on the wrong end of a 19-14 decision against PSAC Western Division opponent Shippensburg. The ESU defenders held the Red Raiders to 233 yards, 131 rushing and 102 passing, and 11 first downs. They forced six turnovers, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

Linebacker Henry Breckenridge (Fr., Peabody, Mass./Cushing Academy), making his first career start, led the team with nine tackles and also had an interception. Defensive backs Michael Glover (So., Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee) and Jeremy Brown (Sr., Centreville, Va./Centreville) each had seven tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

The three Shippensburg touchdowns came on a 94-yard kickoff return and drives of only 11 yards following an interception and 44 yards after a fumble recovery.

ESU’s offense didn’t manage much better, gaining only 257 yards, 116 rushing and 141 passing, and 13 first downs. The team’s lone touchdown came on a 38-yard pass from quarterback Jeremy Palm (Sr., West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) to wide receiver John Kotarsky (Sr., Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) with 1:16 remaining.

Palm was 14 for 27 for 141 yards while Kotarsky caught seven passes for 127 yards. Greg Vaughn (So., Madison, N.J./Madison) was the top rusher with 57 yards on 11 carries despite leaving the game with an injury in the second quarter.

The Warriors’ kicking game was strong. Punter Adam Hostetter (Sr., Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) punted nine times for a 44.3-yard average including pinning Shipp back on its 7 and 9 yard line on two second-half punts. Kicker Mike Berry (Sr., Clarks Summit, Pa./Miami Southridge) booted field goals of 28 and 19 yards.

Women's Soccer (5-8, 3-6 PSAC)

Justina Woolf (Sr., Womelsdorf, Pa./Tulpehocken) scored the team’s only goals during the week in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference losses to Bloomsburg, 3-0, and Slippery Rock, 4-2.

Woolf now has 12 goals in 13 games and 65 goals for her career. She has turned in 11 multiple-goal games, including the pair against Slippery Rock, and has 13 game-winning goals.

Men's Soccer (12-4, 4-2 PSAC)

Mike Lotocki (Jr., Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) booted in the winning goals in each game as the ESU men’s soccer team edged Bloomsburg, 2-1, and Slippery Rock, 4-2, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action last week. The Warriors, PSAC champions the last four years, raised their league record to 4-2 and are now tied for second place with West Chester behind California, 4-0-1. The top three finishers will make the playoffs.

Lotocki booted in a goal with 1:02 remaining off a pass from Dom Sciurba (So., East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) for the victory against Bloomsburg. Tom Mustac (Jr., West Milford, N.J./Clifton) scored the team’s first goal with Brandon Smith (Sr., Forksville, Pa./Sullivan County) getting an assist.

Later in the week, Lotocki scored the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute to break a 2-2 tie and carry the team to a 4-2 win over Slippery Rock. Chris Pinto (Sr., Santa Cruz, Bolivia/St. Benedict’s) assisted. Mustac, Sean Stewart (Jr., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Munro College) and Joey Piscopo (Jr., Spotswood, N.J..Spotswood) also scored with Pinto getting a second assist.

Women's Volleyball (13-8, 3-2 PSAC Eastern Division)

Jessica Nourse (Sr., Hanover, Pa./Williamsburg) made 14 kills in 25 attempts with two errors for a .450 hitting average to lead the Warriors to a 3-0 win over Millersville. The win propelled the defending champion Warriors into a virtual tie for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division with Kutztown with one loss apiece.

Three juniors also starred in the victory. Andrea Myers (Jr., Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) added nine kills and 12 digs,April Mellott (Jr., Dover, Pa./Spring Grove) eight kills and a team-high 14 digs and Heidi Johnston (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) made 35 assists and 12 digs.

The team also downed Cheyney, 3-0, with Lindsay Newmyer (Fr., Pottsville, Pa./Blue Mountain) the leader with nine kills and a .500 hitting average and Abby Hazelton (Fr., Telford, Pa./Souderton) next with seven kills and a .667 hitting mark.

The field hockey team clinched a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs by beating Kutztown, 4-1, last Monday, and then won one of three non-conference games, downing C.W. Post and losing to Houghton and Longwood.

The Warriors will play at Shippensburg Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the PSAC semi-finals. Both teams finished 6-2 in the league. The winner will travel to first-place Lock Haven, 7-0, for the conference championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. Shippensburg beat ESU, 1-0, in double overtime in their regular-season meeting.

This will be ESU’s ninth playoff appearance with four third and four fourth-place

finishes. The Warriors have never made the conference finals.

Michelle Butkus (Sr., Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) scored on a breakaway after only 3:24 to play the Warriors ahead quickly against Kutztown. Rachel Miller (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) added an unassisted first-half goal. Kate Dideon (Sr., Lancaster, Pa./Living Word Academy) scored one goal in the second half and set up Sara Gorman (So., Biglersville, Pa./Biglersville) for the second goal.

Miller had a pair of assists in goals by Mardelle Swoyer (Sr., Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and Jess Anders (Sr., Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) against C.W. Post. Goalie Kelly Wagner (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) made eight saves in picking up her ninth shutout of the season.

Women's Cross Country (3-0)

Last Week's Results: Ursinus (H) 20-41W, West Chester (H) 20-35W, New York University (H) 22-33W

The Warriors swept a home women’s cross country meet over Ursinus, West Chester and New York University. Heather Bjorndahl (Sr., Coram, N.Y./Longwood) led the ESU women by placing fourth in a field of 39 runners to lead the ESU women. She was timed in 20:34 on the 5,000-meter course.

Jane Grendel (Fr., Scranton, Pa./Scranton) was fifth in 20:35 with Kelly Curry (So., Pittston, Pa./Pittston) sixth in 20:40, Hollie Smith (So., Elizabethtown, Pa./ Donegal) eighth in 20:51 and Holly Holtzinger (So., York, Pa./Central York) ninth in 20:56.

The Warriors competed in a home cross country meet, but they was no team scoring.

ESU’s Mike Loenser (So., South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) placed second of 25 runners in a 5,000-meter time of 16:49.

Rob Lado (Fr., Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) was third in 16:56 with Mike Browne (So., Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) fourth, 17:00; Matt Bowman (Fr,, Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) sixth, 17:25, and Mike Badway (So., Easton, Pa./Easton) seventh, 17:28.
