Sunday, 2nd Annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational Track Meet, 10 a.m.

Representatives from 37 colleges will be competing in the second annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet Sunday in ESU's Koehler Fieldhouse. Field events will start at 10 a.m. with the first running event at 10:30.

 

Men's Basketball (9-9, 2-2 PSAC Eastern Division)

The scoring of Juwan Justice (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and the all-around play of Shahad Abdur-Rahkman (So., Allentown, Pa./William Allen) carried the Warriors to a 66-58 victory over Columbia Union.

Justice scored 17 points of his game-high 19 points in the second half. He had 12 of the points during a 22-6 run which carried ESU from behind into a 47-34 lead. Rahkman came close to a triple double with ten points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

Guard Gabe Crowley (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) scored in double figures in both games last week with 17 points in a 76-69 loss to Millersville and 14 points against Columbia Union. Guard Wayne Bishop (Fr., Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) had 16 points in the Millersville game.

Forward Kelly Hutchison (Sr., Reading, Pa./Exeter) scored 36 points as the Warriors split a pair of games last week.

Hutchison had her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 78-51 victory over Columbia Union. Earlier in the week, she tallied a game-high 17 points in a 79-51 loss to Millersville. She is averaging 13.9 points and has scored in double figures in 15 of the team's 18 games.

Guard Megan Ross (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) also scored in doubles twice last week with 14 points against Millersville and 11 against Columbia Union.

Forward Michele Pilenza (Jr., Delran, N.J./Delran) scored 11 points and fed off six assists in the Columbia Union game while guard Heather Wolfe (Fr., York Haven, Pa./Red Land) had five assists and Shelly Garlach (Fr., Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) four assists in the same game.

Women's Swimming (8-2)

Last Week's Results: Scranton (H) 110-95W, Millersville (H) 146-103W

The ESU swimmers dominated the freestyle sprints in beating Scranton, 110-95, and Millersville, 146-103, last week to raise the team's record to 8-2, one shy of the school record for most victories in a season jointly held by the 1986 (9-3) and 1987 (9-4) teams..

Karen Scott (So., Berwick, Pa./Berwick) captured the 50-yard freestyle in both meets with times of 25.27 against Scranton and 25.60 against Millersville. She was followed to the line by teammates Donna Gebhard (Sr., Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Natalie Harbold (Fr., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)

The three then combined with Erin Kowalik (Sr., Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) on a 200-yard freestyle relay team which had a team-season best time of 1:41.76 in winning the event against Scranton. Kowalik won the 100 freestyle against Scranton with a time of 56.40 and was a double winner in the Millersville meet with victories in the 100 free in 56.76 and the 200 free in 2:03.80.

Heather Clouser (Jr., Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) was a triple winner against Millersville with first places in the 100 back (1:04.12), 200 back (2:15.82) and 500 freestyle (5:37.88). She won the 100 back (1:03.40) in the Scranton meet.

Other individual winners during the week were Mikaela Thorne (Fr., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) first in the 100-yard breaststroke against both Scranton (1:11.50) and Millersville (1:12.20). Jamie Miller (Jr., Northampton, Pa./Northampton) won twice against 'the Ville in the 100 butterfly (1:01.97) and the 200 fly (2:18.93).

Men's Volleyball (1-0, 0-0 EIVA Hay Division)

Mike Messinger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) made seven kills on his first seven swings in the first game in leading the Warriors to a 3-0 opening-match victory over Mt. St. Vincent. Messinger finished with 15 kills and a .481 hitting average.

Chris James (Jr., Fayettesville, N.Y./Fayettesville-Manilus) made 35 assists while Tom Shaver (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) had five blocks, including four solos, and Brian Harvey (Sr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) ten digs.

Wrestling (4-10)

Last Week's Results: PSAC Championships at Clarion 5th (9 Teams), 57 Points

Five ESU wrestlers won two matches apiece in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestling Championships at Clarion University. The Warriors finished fifth of nine teams in the tournament with 57 points.

Two Warriors, Matt Dudeck (157, Fr., Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Marc Bauknecht (285, Sr., Cheshire, Ct.,/Holy Cross) placed fourth.

Three other wrestlers, Brad Kleckner (141, Jr., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville), Dan Roy (174, Jr., West Belmar, N.J./Wall) and Dan Madonna (184, Sr., Springfield, Pa./Springfield) were fifth. Shawn Smith (165, So., Unityville, Pa./Hughesville) was sixth, reaching the consolation semi-finals, but then having to medically forfeit two matches.

Dudeck pinned John Ratki of Kutztown in 4:05; lost by major to Ed Hockenberry of Bloomsburg, 10-2; decisioned Anthony Errera of Slippery Rock, 6-0, and lost to Jason Gilligan of Lock Haven, 5-3.

Bauknecht decisioned Sam Holloway of Kutztown, 3-1; was pinned by John Testa of Clarion, 1:22; decisioned Chris Bulley of Shippensburg, 7-3, and was pinned by Craig Tefft of Lock Haven, 4:38.

Kleckner lost to Cory Ace of Edinboro, 9-8; pinned Don Campbell of Kutztown, 5:08; lost to Frank Edgar of Clarion, 9-4, and pinned Justin Haupt of Bloomsburg in 4:05.

Roy lost to Aaron Mitchell of Clarion, 2-1; decisioned Walter Putnam of Millersville, 3-2; lost to Ed Pawlak of Lock Haven, 6-2, and decisioned Adam Shawver of Slippery Rock, 10-5.

Madonna was pinned by Josh Millard of Lock Haven in 1:14; pinned John Opfar of Slippery Rock in 1:41; was pinned by Justin Millard of Edinboro in 3:45, and decisioned Brian McDonald of Millersville, 8-3.

Smith lost by technical fall to Hunter Guenot of Bloomsburg, 16-1, 7:00; decisioned Pete Kroshefskie of Clarion, 5-4, and then lost two matches by medical forfeit.

Mark Stinson (So., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) was the Warriors' top male finisher in the Bison Indoor Track and Field Open at Bucknell University.

Stinson captured the 55-meter dash in 6.55 and led an ESU one-two-three sweep in the long jump with a leap of 22-5 3/4. He also placed second in the 200-meter dash in 23.19.

ESU's Russ Holmes (Sr., Allengtown, Pa./Salisbury) was second in the long jump at 22-0 and third in the triple jump at 45-0 and Mike Newhard (Fr., Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) was second in the high jump at 6-5 and third in the long jump at 21-4 1/4.

Other individual top-three finishers for Coach Joe Koch's team were Doug Springer (Jr., Randolph, N.J./Randolph), second in the pole vault at 14-9, and Brad Fees (So., Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville), third in the high jump at 6-5.

The Warriors were second in the men's distance medley relay in 10:59.43 with a team of Brian Trentowski (Sr., Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem), 3:23.5; Jim Dawson (Fr., Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), 52.9; Aaron Roderick (Fr., Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh), 2:06.4, and Darryl Brown (Fr, Avondale, Pa./Kennett), 4:36.0).

Women's Indoor Track and Field (0-0)

Angela Gray (Fr., Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) sprinted to victory in two events at the Bison Indoor Track and Field Open at Bucknell University. She won the 200-meter dash in 26.68 and the 500 in 1:21.23.

The Warriors had one other winner with Shavanna Ross (Sr., Center Valley, Pa./William Allen) first in the 400-meter dash in 59.81. She also was second in the high jump at 5-4 1/2.

ESU's Cheryl Griffin (Sr., Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) was second in the 55 in 7.40 and third in the 400 in 60.69. Heather Bjorndahl (Jr., Coram, N.Y./Longwood) took third in the 1,000-meter run in 3:11.02.
