EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Male - Brandon Mihalko, Wrestling - Runner-up at 165 pounds for best finish by an ESU freshman in 16 years in the PSAC Wrestling Championships at Kutztown.

Female - Natasha Jarrett, Track and Field - third in the shot put with school's best throw in the event in 16 years and fourth in the 55-meter dash at 32-team Bison Open at Bucknell

 

UPCOMING HIGHLIGHT HOME ATHLETIC EVENT

Saturday- Third Annual Dick DeSchriver Track Classic, 10:00

Approximately 400-500 athletes from 35-40 colleges will compete in the third annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational Indoor Track and Field Classic Saturday in the Koehler Fieldhouse beginning at 10 a.m. At 12 noon, a plaque will be unveiled recognizing the ESU Alumni Association and the ESU Foundation for their contributions in funding the new indoor track in the fieldhouse.

 

Women's Basketball (5-12, 1-3 PSAC East)

Forward Tiffany Barnes (Jr., Middletown, Pa./Middletown) scored a career-high 24 points as the Warriors turned in a great effort in an early-week 79-67 loss to nationally-ranked 15-1 Bloomsburg. They trailed by only one points with six minutes left and four points with 2:39 to go before the Huskies scored the last eight points of the game.

Barnes made 10 of 13 shots from the floor and 4 of 6 free throws. She also had two assists and a steal. Later in the week, she scored ten points on 4 for 7 shooting in a 66-46 loss to Millersville and six points, making 2 for 5 shots, in an 80-52 defeat to Pitt-Johnstown.

Center Vanessa Kraft (So., Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) added 11 points and guard Heather Wolfe (So., York Haven, Pa./Red Land) eight points and eight rebounds against Bloomsburg. Guard Shelly Garlach (So., Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) was the team's only double-figure scorer against UPJ with 11 points.

Women's Swimming (6-2)

Karen Scott (Jr., Berwick, Pa./Berwick) won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.10 and also anchored the winning 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams to lead the Warriors to victory over Millersville in a dual meet.

The ESU team had four other individual winners in Mikaela Thorne (So., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham), 100-yard breaststroke, 1:12.10; Natalie Weingartner (Fr., Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), 100 backstroke, 1:02.12; Jamie Miller (Sr., Northampton, Pa./Northampton), 200 butterfly, 2:26.55, and Heather Clouser (Sr., Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing), 200 backstroke, 2:15.23.

Clouser, Thorne and Miller combined with Scott on the medley relay team which was timed in 4:17.79. Natalie Harbold (So., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle), Weingartner and Linzi Reese (Fr., Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) took the water before Scott on the 200 freestyle relay which finished in 1:46.0.

Men's Basketball (3-12, 0-3 PSAC East)

Guard Dave Fedorka (So., Colver, Pa. (Central Cambria) was the team's only double figure scorer with ten points in a 53-35 loss to Millersville. Fedorka, returning to action after missing six games because of a broken hand, made 3 of 4 shots from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and sank both of his free throw attempts.

Forward Rob Georges (So., Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) grabbed a career-high 13 reobunds and had four blocked shots. In a statistical oddity, the Warriors had 35 points and 35 rebounds and Millersville had 53 points and 53 rebounds.

Indoor Track and Field

Versatile Natasha Jarrett (So., Somerset, N.J./Franklin) placed third in the shot put with the Warriors' best performance in the event in 16 years and also was fourth in the 55-meter dash at the Bison Indoor Track and Field Open at Bucknell University.

Jarrett tossed the shot put 41-2 1/2, the furthest throw by an ESU woman since Renee Konopka's 41- 9 1/1 in 1986. She was timed in 7.50 in the 55 dash.

The Warriors' top finish in the 32-team meet was by Brian Holkovic (Sr., Mitchell, Neb./Mitchell), who was second in the pole vault among collegiate competitors at 14-3. Tawny Youtz (Fr., Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) was third in the 55 dash in 7.49 and Mark Stinson (Jr., Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) was fourth in the long jump at 21-10 1/2.

Wrestling (5-6)

Last Week's Results: PSAC Championships 6th (9 teams, 62 1/2 points)

Brandon Mihalko (165, Fr., Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) finished second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships for the best finish by an ESU freshman in the conference since Jack Cuvo was runner-up at 118 pounds in 1986. Cuvo went on to win three PSAC titles and two NCAA national crowns.

Mihalko won three straight matches over Ryan Wasser of Kutztown, 16-7; Craig Pequignot of Millersville, 3-1, and Chris Haines of Lock Haven, 13-9, before falling to nationally-ranked Matt King of team champion Edinboro, 10-4, in the finals. He raised his season record to 16-4.

Brad Kleckner (141, Sr., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) placed third with four wins and one loss. He pinned his first two opponents, Stephen Stremble of Clarion in 4:00 and Joe Bentz of Kutztown in 4:36 before losing a technical fall to James Lavelle, 17-1, in the semi-finals. He came back to beat Derek Sola of Millersville, 2-2, on a tie-breaker, and Adam Castner of Bloomsburg, 13-6, in the consolation finals.

Keith Kleckner (149, So., Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville), Matt Dudeck (157, So., Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Dan Roy (184, Sr., West Belmar, N.J./Wall) all finished fourth.

Kleckner won by default over Craig Kunsman of Kutztown in 5:50; lost to James Lavalle of Lock Haven, 7-0; decisioned Shawn Blanchard of Millersville, 7-1, and lost to Dominic Surra of Clarion, 9-3.

Dudeck pinned Jason Cardillo of Slippery Rock in 6:45, lost a technical fall to JaMarr Billman of Lock Haven, 24-6 in 6:57, pinned Chris Jacobs of Kutztown in 1:52, and lost to Jeremy Reitz of Clarion, 3-2.

Roy won two matches over Aaron Telatovich, 15-1, and Nick Brumbaugh of Kutztown, 5-4, lost to Ed Pawlak of Lock Haven, 14-4, beat Curtis Yeager of Millersville, 10-3, and lost to Todd Schuchert of Clarion, 10-4.

Men's Volleyball (2-2)

Last Week's Results: *Sacred Heart (H) 26-30, 31-29, 19-30, 29-31L. *EIVA Tait Division match.

Middle blocker Jarrett Merkel (Jr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) had a big night at the net with 11 kills in 18 attempts without an error for a .611 hitting average, but the Warriors dropped a 3-1 match to Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opponent Sacred Heart.

Outside hitter Ryan Peters (Sr., Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) added 12 kills and made a team-high 22 digs. Setter Chris James (Sr., Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) had 46 assists and six blocks, three solo.
