Tailback Andre Castiglioni (Jr., Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) scored the winning touchdown on a 25-yard run with 1:05 remaining to cap a 99-yard drive and give the Warriors a season-opening 37-33 win over Clarion.
The Warriors took the ball over on their own one-yard line with 4:38 remaining and moved down the field in nine plays. Castiglioni carried six times for 53 yards and quarterback Jeremy Palm (Jr., West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) completed passes of nine yards to fullback A.J. Oliveri (So., Pittston, Pa./Pittston) and 17 and 20 yards to wide receiver Mike Patrick(Sr., East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg)
Castiglioni finished with a career-best 154 yards on 26 running attempts for an average of 5.9 yards per carry. He was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Offensive Player of the Week
Palm fired four touchdown passes, all in the first half, 24 and 48 yards to wide receiver John Kotarsky (Jr., Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and 35 and 48 yards to wide receiver Larry Harrison (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty). He was 11 for 17 overall for 241 yards passing. Kotarsky made five receptions for 102 yards.
The Warriors had an almost perfectly balanced offense, gaining 239 yards rushing and 241 yards passing for a total of 480 yards. The huge front line turned in a strong performance led by guard Jim Sodano (Jr., Madison, N.J./Bayley-Ellard), who scored 85 percent in the film evaluations.
On defense, the Warriors allowed only 248 yards, 162 rushing and 86 passing, their best performance in five years since they held Cheyney to 205 yards in 1995.
Linebacker Kevin Nagle (Grad., Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley), a three-time All-PSAC first team selection, made a eye-catching start to his final season with a game-high 19 tackles. This included three sacks for 21 yards with two of them on third down plays which forced to Clarion to punt in the fourth quarter. He was chosen as the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year.
Defensive Adam DeAngelo (So., East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) made 13 tackles and linebacker Rich Butcofski (Jr., Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) had ten tackles and a fumble recovery and also blocked an extra point attempt.

Tom Mustac (Jr., West Milford, N.J./Clifton) scored a pair of goals as the ESU men's soccer team opened its season with a 5-1 romp over St. Anselm. The Hawks had beaten ESU, 3-0, in last year's season opener.
The Warriors then battled New Hampshire College to a 0-0 double overtime tie. Jason Land (Jr., Carney's Point, N.J./St. James) posted the shutout, making seven saves over 120 minutes. This included two spectacular stops on almost-certain NHC goals.
All three teams were ranked in the top 20 in the NCAA Division II pre-season poll. New Hampshire was 13th, ESU 16th and St. Anselm 18th.
Jorge Chapoy (So., Monclova, Mexico/Pequea Valley, Pa.), Jason Cropper (Fr., D'Abadie, Trinidad/Fatima College) and Ahmet Kose (Jr., North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) all had a goal and assist against St. Anselm. Kamar Samuels (Fr., St. Eliza-beth, Jamaica/Munro College) and Chris Farina (Sr., Schwenks-ville, Pa./Souderton) also had assists.

The ESU women's soccer team dropped a pair of game in the Lady Chieftains Kickoff Classic at Stonehill College.
Goalie Liz Guinup (Sr., Washingtonville, N.Y./John Burke Catholic) kept the Warriors in contention in a first round game against host Stonehill with 11 saves. The Chieftains won in overtime, 1-0.
Then in the second round, Gwen Gemberling (So., Mechanics-burg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored an unassisted goal in the sixth minute of the game to put ESU ahead against Assumption. But the Greyhounds almost immediately tied the score and then won the game with two goals in the final seven minutes.
