Last Week's Results: Glenville (A) 10-0W.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Warriors used the running of tailbacks Andre Castiglioni (Jr., Reading, Pa./ Muhlenberg) and Nate Pendry (Fr., Catasauqua,Pa./Catasauqua) and an outstanding defensive performance to upend Glenville State, 10-0, for the team's third straight win.
Castiglioni turned in his third 100-yard rushing game of the season with 148 yards on 24 carries. Pendry added 80 yards on only seven rushing attempts and set up the game's lone touchdown on a 30-yard run to the Glenville two-yard line near the end of the third quarter. Fullback A.J. Oliveri (So., Pittston, Pa./Pittston) took the ball into the endzone.
Mike Berry (Jr., Clarks Summit, Pa./Miami Southridge, Fla.) booted the extra point and a 36-yard game-clinching field goal in the fourth quarter.
The ESU defense allowed Glenville only 182 yards total offense, 59 rushing and 123 passing, in the school's first shutout win in nine years. It was the least yards allowed since Cheyney gained only 83 yards in the last shutout, a 28-0 win in 1991.
The entire defensive unit contributed to the victory with numerous big plays in the second half. Linebacker Kevin Nagle (Gr., Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) finished as the team's leading tackler with 13, giving him a conference-best 43 tackles in three games. He also had an interception and had the team's highest mark at 91 percent in the film evaluations.
Defensive end Adam DeAngelo (So., East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) followed with ten tackles including a sack while linebacker Rich Butcofski (Sr., Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) had seven tackles and recovered a fumble. Nick Beisker (So., Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) also made an interception.
The Pioneers managed only three first downs and didn't get of their own territory in the first half. In the second half, they got past the 50 into ESU territory four times. Their further advance was to the 17-yard line where linebacker Eric Markovcy (So., Northampton, Pa./ Northampton) stuffed the Glenville ball-carrier on a fourth-and-one situation to give ESU possession.
Tackle Dustin Barno (So., Easton, Pa./Easton) also made a key stop in the fourth quarter to force a Glenville punt and cornerback Jeremy Brown (So., Centreville, Va./Centreville) made a fourth-down tackle after a pass reception to end another Pioneer drive.
The last time the Warriors were 3-0 was in 1994 when they beat Lafayette and Springfield on the road and Southern Connecticut at home in succession before losing their fourth game to West Chester and winding up 5-5. ESU will open its home season Saturday against Shepherd, an NCAA Division II playoff team the last two years. The Rams won last year's meeting between the two teams, 33-27, in double overtime.
