Mellott Named Player of Year; Greenlee Coach of Year

in PSAC Eastern Division Volleyball Balloting

 

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - East Stroudsburg University's April Mellott was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Player of the Year and ESU's John Greenlee was chosen as the Coach of the Year as the PSAC all-star volleyball teams were announced Tuesday.

The division champion Warriors had three players, Mellott, setter Ashleigh Reinert and middle blocker Sarah Brown, named on the All-PSAC Eastern Division first team. A fourth ESU player, outside hitter Andrea Myers, was named to the second team.

A total of 12 players, six on the first team and six on the second, were honored in a balloting of the division's six head volleyball coaches.

Mellott led the PSAC East in hitting with a .358 average and in kills with 428 or 4.20 per game. The 5-8 sophomore from Dover (Spring Grove HS) had been the PSAC East Rookie of the Year last season.

Reinert, a senior from Dover (Dover HS) made 979 assists for an average of 8.66 per game and added 79 kills and 26 service aces. Brown, a freshman from Pine Grove (Pine Grove HS) topped the team in blocks with 98, including 47 solo blocks, and had 211 kills.

Myers, a sophomore from Mount Wolf (Northeastern HS) was the division leader in digs with 338 for an average of 3.38. She also made a team-leading 49 service aces and had 314 kills, second on the team.

Greenlee took over the ESU volleyball program in August and guided the Warriors to their first PSAC East title in four years with a 9-1 record. The team is 16-16 overall and has gained a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament starting Thursday at Lock Haven.

Before coming to ESU, Greenlee had been an assistant women's coach at his alma mater, Hamilton College for two years.

Jessie Didier, a middle blocker from Kutztown, was named the PSAC East Rookie of the Year. Other players on the first team were middle blocker Jenn Fuhrman and setter Sabea Mosemann of Shippensburg.

Making the second team in addition to Myers were outside hitters Missy Klein and Erin VanGorder and opposite Jen Kratz of Kutztown and outside hitters Erin Ford and Tanya Novik of West Chester.
