2001 East Stroudsburg Women's Volleyball Wrapup

Team Record: 18-10 (PSAC East Champion)

The women's volleyball team won its second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division title and finished with an 18-10 record, best in five years at the school.

Coach John Greenlee's Warriors posted a 9-1 conference record, clinching the title with late-season victories over West Chester, 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-25), and Kutztown, 3-1 (15-30, 30-24, 32-30, 30-27). The team moved on to the PASC Final Four, meeting Edinboro in the semi-finals. The Fightin' Scots won in three straight games, 30-21, 30-25 and 30-26, went on to win the conference championship.

Outside hitter April Mellott made the All-PSAC Eastern Division first team for the third straight year. She was joined by setter Heidi Johnson. Three other ESU players, middle blocker Sarah Brown and outside hitters Jessica Nourse and Andi Myers were second team selections. Mellott led the team in kills with a total of 342 kills for an average of 3.76 kills per game, one of the top marks in the conference. The 5-8 junior from Dover, Pa. also was the team leader in digs with 382 for an average of 4.20 per game, second in the division. She was selected as the PSAC Player of the Week twice. The first week, she had 30 kills in 70 swings and only two errors for a .371 hitting average in a 3-2 win over West Chester and then had 12 kills in 20 attempts with two errors for a .500 mark in a 3-0 victory over Pace. In the last week of the season, she took charge with 13 kills, a .460 hitting average and 37 digs in a division-clinching win over Kutztown.

Myers was the top server in the PSAC East with 53 aces in 83 games for an average of 0.64 per game. She also was second on the team in both kills with 259 for an average of 3.12 per game and digs with 319 or 3.84 per game, right below Mellott in the league statistics. Johnson put up 995 assists or 10.26 per game. Brown was the team leader in blocks with 61 followed by middle blocker Cassie Brinn with 48. Nourse made 238 kills while Brown had 199 and Brinn 117.

The team's ddefensive specialists were Kristen O'Connell, who made 258 digs and 35 service aces, and Jodi Wenger, 180 digs and 47 aces. Wenger was chosen as the conference player of the Week after making an amazing 32 service aces in two matches against Cheyney and New Jersey Tech. Kristin Matejicka, Abby Hazelton and Becky Higgins also saw considerable action for the team.
